GPUs are overclocked => overheating
GeForce GTX 980 @ 1430MHz [1216 MHz]
GeForce GTX 980 Ti @ 1367MHz [1076 MHz]

It is recommended to reduce base clock and/or memory clock of overclocked GPUs.

GPUs are overclocked => overheating
GeForce GTX 980 @ 1430MHz [1216 MHz]
GeForce GTX 980 Ti @ 1367MHz [1076 MHz]

It is recommended to reduce base clock and/or memory clock of overclocked GPUs.

they're 20th anniversary editions (as stated in the 1st post) , these are the base clocks these 2 models.

Not exactly. Those are the factory OC clocks. Different manufacturers do so as they add higher quality components and fans to their higher priced cards. As cards get older, their ability to maintain that OC declines such that it is not unusual to need to revert back to the NVidia base clocks for those chips.

I didn't think about that this way, I'll see what I can do, or I'll live with the occasionnal bunch of errors :)

The GPU precision used in these programs are higher density than many of the other projects, and this is the reason this happens.
You can always try doing some good cleaning of the fans, reseat the card and generally make sure there is enough airflow around the card to allow the heat to dissipate faster.

I don't think airflow is a problem :)

I'll dust them again, photo makes it looks like there's a lot more dust than there is :)

Ok, using tthrottle, I've set a max temp of 75C, still got some errors
I set it to max 70C, we'll see.

So GPU will be throttled in order not to exceed this temp

As I had to myself, & as has been suggested here, reduce the clocks to nVidia base or even slightly below if necessary. My 580s were factory OC 783, nVidia base 772 - I typically set them to 705 (10% below) to do GFN.

No point risking errors & waiting time & electricity.

I apologize for the ignorance here - but how do I set a maximum temperature for the GPU? I'm having the same issue - the smaller GFN tasks process without issue, but if I try to do 22 or 23 I sometimes get errors and all that time/electricity is wasted.

There are a few ways of doing it, but MSI's Afterburner is one of the best options. It has sliders so you can set maximum or target values allowed for your GPU.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've downloaded this. But it appears that the settings don't "stick" - that is to say, they reset if I close the program or restart the computer. Is there any way to have it catch this automatically to keep it below a certain temperature (and how does one know what temperature is best?) Thanks again for helping despite my rather rudimentary questions.

You'll need to keep the program running for it to do its thing, closing it will generally lose the settings. Just minimize it and ignore it.

It should be automatically applying your settings when it starts. There's a button with a Windows icon. If you click that and see the red ring it will start when you start the machine and then kick in. When you have the settings you want, you can add them to a profile (the padlock/save and numbers on the right side). But it shouldn't be necessary.

Everyone has a preference for ideal temperature, and of course it needs to be well below the max allowed GPU temp for the software to really do anything. Since overheating may be causing your problems, start at, say, 75C and see how it goes (this is what I do). The lower the temp you set, the harder it will run the fans, so it's about changing a little and seeing how it goes until everything is stable and the noise is at a level you can live with. You may also want to lower the memory or core clocks using the slider. It will make things a bit more stable and will drastically reduce power and cooling requirements.
