Several years ago my daughter wanted to buy a tablet, and my reaction was, "Of what use could one of those be? She explained how it could serve many useful purposes, and how Amazon had really inexpensive 7" tablets. On sale, they were about $35. How awful could it possibly be that they weren't worth $35?

Not awful at all, actually. I ended up buying a bunch of them for several family members.

Of course, the tablet I kept for myself has BOINC installed on it. It annoys me. Every other computer I have that runs BOINC I can control with BOINCTasks, but not this tablet. I can't communicate with its BOINC client because that requires setting up gui_rpc_auth.cfg and remote_hosts.cfg.

I tried using a file explorer app. The data directory is /data/data/edu.berkeley.boinc/boinc-client/. I can't get to that directory; permission is denied.

I tried the Android debugger. Still permission is denied.

Run-as edu.berkeley.boinc? Debugging that app is not permitted.

Time to kick it up a notch. I really, really would prefer not to root the thing, but this is beginning to get under my skin. So, where were those instructions for rooting an Amazon Fire tablet again?

Hmmmm. There's two year old instruction for rooting an older version of the software, but it's two years old.

Uh oh. Recent versions of Fire OS can't be rooted at all. Amazon has locked it down, and there's no way to root it now, and without rooting it, there's no way to get to the BOINC data directory.

Or is there?

I've got two more methods I can try:

1) Create a customized BOINC app that installs the correct gui_rpc_auth.cfg and remote_hosts.cfg files. I'm not 100% sure an app can do it, but it might work.

2) Build a custom version of the Android BOINC client app, or simply add those two files to the existing app, and install that instead of the official BOINC client app using the Android developer SDK. I'm pretty sure this one has to work.

Hopefully, plan #1 will work, because it's a lot easier. It really only needs to be a simple shell script packaged as a BOINC app.

All this just so I can have the convenience of monitoring that tablet's BOINC client on the same screen as all the other BOINC clients!

I don't think that's going to be necessary. It looks like method 1, using a custom shell script as a BOINC app, is going to work.

I did play around with android a few years ago, trying to do something similar but frustrated, ended up rooting the tablet in the end. As you say, they do a very good job of locking it down in recent versions.

My plan worked. Sort of. I was able to set up BOINC's configuration files despite not having permission to access the BOINC data directory.

In the end, this is the script I used as a "BOINC task" (edited for clarity):

#!/system/bin/sh pwd 1>&2 chmod 666 ../../gui_rpc_auth.cfg 1>&2 ls -l ../../gui_rpc_auth.cfg 1>&2 echo "192.168.1.3" >../../remote_hosts.cfg cat ../../remote_hosts.cfg 1>&2 chmod 666 ../../remote_hosts.cfg 1>&2 ls -l ../../remote_hosts.cfg 1>&2 chmod 777 . 1>&2 ls -l ../../.. 1>&2 touch boinc_finish_called exit 0

In order, the tasks it did:

1) Printed the directory where BOINC is, to verify what I'd read on the web.
2) Printed the contents of the password file. I first tried changing the password, but that left the BOINC manager portion of the app unable to communicate with the BOINC client portion of the app. Apparently it stores the password elsewhere. Instead of changing the password, I displayed it's randomized password and use that to connect to the tablet.
3) I change the permission on the password file to leave myself a backdoor to be able to change it in the future by using adb.

Changing the password sort of worked -- I did the next best thing by exposing the existing password.

4) Create the remote hosts.cfg file, as planned. I also set the permission on this file to allow future manipulation with adb.

That part worked.

5) To leave myself a backdoor, the last thing I did was change the permission on the entire BOINC directory. Or at least tried to.

This part didn't work.

The end result was I had the password, and remote_hosts had the IP address of my computer. Success!

Except I still can't connect to the tablet, and I don't understand why I can't connect. In the end, my plan to use a bogus BOINC app to change BOINC's configuration files worked as intended. I was able to set up the configuration files to permit a remote BOINC manager to connect to the client. It's just not working for some reason.

I'm not sure whether or not I have access to iptables, and at the moment I'm struggling with driver hell (on the PC side) trying to connect with adb. The apps permissions, however, permit "full network access", as well as discovering network interfaces.

When I try to manually open up port 31416 (the BOINC RPC port) on the tablet, the connection is closed immediately. On every other computer that runs boinc the connection stays open as long as the BOINC client is running.

at the moment I'm struggling with driver hell (on the PC side) trying to connect with adb.

I hear you. Of the three days it took me to complete the job, 2.5 days were getting the pc ready to talk to the tablet. The drivers and software version interdependence is super sensitive.

Perhaps I would have saved some time had I read this earlier:

To answer the original question, yes, you can build BOINC for Android yourself. See Building BOINC. I can search what you need to change once you have a working build system.

The stock client for Android can't be controlled remotely. It's hard-coded to use Unix local sockets for GUI RPCs. I believe (but don't take my word for it) this is so that the client is less likely to introduce a remotely exploitable security hole and thus be more likely that Google accepts bundling it with Android.

In other totally irrelevant news, I did get the adb drivers working again. I had to convince the tablet to connect as a file system instead of a camera, after which it started talking to adb again. That, in turn, allowed me to confirm that whether or not iptables is also a problem, I don't have permission to do anything about it.

Now I have to decide whether or not I want to install the full Android development platform, figure out how to build the Android boinc client, and backport the normal network into the android version from the linux version of the client.

I hear you. I have two tablets and a smartphone crunching when they're charging (one tablet is an older one I no longer use and is crunching 24/7 now) and it bothers me that I have all my machines neatly visible in BOINCTasks except for those three. I used to have an ancient (2010?) HTC crunching Einstein (nothing else worked on it) on its single core and was using another app called NativeBOINC, which actually did permit the whole remote host thing, but the official app alas does not.

Anyway, erm, I can't contribute anything to this, just can relate, is all. Fingers crossed you guys figure something out.

For those who think crunching on a tablet is a waste of silicon, please be reminded that an iPad 2 has about the same computational power as a Cray 2 supercomputer from 1985. This is an apples-and-oranges comparison, with the balance in favour of the iPad, since a single-threaded task on the iPad holds its own against the vector operations of the Cray 2.

EDIT: that's in today's dollars.
In 1985 dollars, $12 million to $17 million depending on configuration.

Wow..........just wow. That's crazy. Any idea of the cost of a cray2 back in the day?

Sweet. Love these type of stats. Just fantastic. Thanks for making my day :)

It took 9 years to develop the Cray 2. (computerhistory.org)

In 1993, the Cray 3 supercomputer, with a whopping 474 MHz clock, was supposed to be 10 times faster than the Cray 2.
The Cray 3 was a technical failure because the machine was unreliable.

That reminds me... (and getting off topic)
As part of my job, I used to write COMPASS assembly code on a CBC Cyber 830 superminicomputer (upward compatible with the CDC 6600 supercomputer also designed by Seymour Cray).
Packing multiple instructions into a 60-bit word, it was a nightmare to code and debug.
