Hello all,

it has been a long time since I've been here and on the forums, so I'm a bit rusty.

I want to make a new build, but with no GPU. I want to do CPU only tasks(preferably the longest ones). As of now, I have an i7 2600k OC @4.2 GHz, 16gb of ddr3 ram computer I got from a friend. But I see my i7 2600k showing it's age now because, on the focus project of prime grid, I'm told it's 6-7 days before it completes.

So I'm posting to ask people who have more experience what CPU should I buy? how much ram should I get? right now I am focusing on the focus project "Seventeen or Bust LLR (SOB)"

I am hoping to build this myself sometime early next year depending on the price it may be sooner. As of now, I cannot think of a budget, so I'm open for any price. Hopefully, though I won't have to pay over 1k for a pc without a gpu, though. Even building it myself.

Any help I appreciate. Thank you.

Before going over what to buy (will do in a sec), let's make sure you're getting the most of your current hardware. From the looks of it, it seems you're running 8 tasks at once, which is just about the worst way you can go about crunching SOB tasks. For starters, turn off HT in BIOS, it will make tasks go twice as fast. Or, if you can't / don't want to, at least set BOINC to use only 50% of your CPUs.

Next, if you want tasks to go much faster and thus have higher chance to be the primefinder, but don't mind a little loss in overall performance, you can use LLR's multithreading option. With this, you can have multiple cores working on a single task rather than on separate ones, and depending on a bunch of factors, it can range anywhere from a big decrease to a a big increase in overall throughput; regardless, individual tasks end up being faster, so it is rather desireable. Take a look at how to set it up and play with it for a bit to figure out how many cores per taks you should set - I recommend 4 for you, if you leave HT on, or 3 if you disable it.

For starters, do you plan to do anything inn particular with this PC, other than Primegrid and general daily driver activities? If so, it would be nice to know and try to take those into account.

Hi Rafael,

Sorry for the late response. I've had a lot going on.

How may I go about setting multiple cores per task? (LLR multithread) I use this PC for daily use on the internet, but would like to make better use of my cpu with primegrid. I used to game.

I can help with that, just change the lines in this app.config.xml as needed:

Prime Grid app_config.xml

<app_config>
<app>
<name>llrSR5</name>
<fraction_done_exact/>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>
<app_version>
<app_name>llrSR5</app_name>
<cmdline>-t 6</cmdline>
<avg_ncpus>6</avg_ncpus>
</app_version>
</app_config>

And save it as "app.config.xml" no quotes as a text type file in boinc/projects/ primegrid that way it only affects primegrid and no other project. You can find the link to the app names on the PG website in the left column of things.

The above file is telling my pc to run 1 llrSR5 workunit at a time but use 6 cpu cores to do it.

100% of my CPU isn't being used as well as my task manager in windows 10 has to what appears to look like a green leaf and it says suspended next to a few tasks?

I put 12.5% cpu to be used in boinc as that's the only way I see I can do 1 at a time.

Do you recommend I keep my CPU overclocked?

Also any way to get rid of the green leaf popping up in task manager? I see it suspends my tasks for a second on and off which is slowing me down.

Could be throttling the CPU, how are your temps? Could also be BOINC suspending work due to other CPU usage, in which case you can raise the percentage or kill off the other running processes.

If you're certain it is stable and don't mind the increased power (or lower power efficiency) I don't see a problem with that. Of course, usual risks with overclocking still apply.

My temps are fine but they just keep fluctuating since my usage is.

Do you recommend I keep my CPU overclocked?

If you're certain it is stable and don't mind the increased power (or lower power efficiency) I don't see a problem with that. Of course, usual risks with overclocking still apply.

Ah, does overclocking really help this project or nah?

Yes for: Small CPU tasks (depends on CPU, up to PPSE/MEGA, maybe GFN17), sieve, AP
Not necessarily for: large CPU tasks (bigger LLR and genefer projects) as these tend towards being ram bandwidth limited. Where this point is depends on the CPU/ram of the system.

I forgot to specifically mention multi-thread LLR tasks. A single bigger task can fit in the CPU cache, and thus also benefit from an overclock without hitting the ram bandwidth limit. The bigger tests (like the impending SoB challenge) would be ram bandwidth limiting on most systems.

In the Boinc Manager do you have it set to suspend crunching when the cpu usage is above 25%? If so that's the problem, most crunchers change that setting to NOT suspend at all so we crunch 24/7 but people who use their pc's for 'work' too can't always afford the slow downs.

I happen to have an Nvidia Titan Xp star wars collectors edition coming and would like to dedicate this gpu to boinc. What are some tasks on primegrid you'd recommend for this gpu?

The sky is the limit with that card.
It can run everything PG offers. You can even use app_config to run more than one task at a time if you find that one task is not making 100% use of the card.

Hi all,

I'm trying to get a new build within the next year or so still. My focus will be an i7 9700k CPU for the project to replace or go alongside my 2600k! The GPU will be a basic 1060 3GB, as I need nothing fancy. Question though: Should I use 8 or 16 gigs of ram? Also, does anyone here have an 8th or 9th gen i7? How does it perform on this project compared to say my i7 2600k?

Thanks,

Logan

The ram quantity depends on what you will do with the system. Either way, make sure to get a dual channel kit at a higher speed without going silly on spending. Around 3000-3200 shouldn't hurt.

CPUs since Skylake haven't really changed much, so 6 through 9th gen are practically the same for LLR. Per core, per clock, they are significantly faster than 2600k. Haswell introduced FMA which gave a 50% boost over Sandy Bridge. Skylake gave further refinements which resulted in another 14% improvement over that, based on my testing. The problem is, ram bandwidth may limit on bigger tasks. Small tasks will make full use of the CPU easily. Bigger tasks can be helped by running multi-threaded but fast ram will be needed at some point.

The problem is, ram bandwidth may limit on bigger tasks. Small tasks will make full use of the CPU easily. Bigger tasks can be helped by running multi-threaded but fast ram will be needed at some point.

Thank you for the information, I greatly appreciate it! I will most certainly take that info! This system I will only use for crunching and not gaming. I am just curious as to 8 or 16 gigs because if I only need 8 gigs of ram it will save me lots of money.

2x4GB is sufficient for a pure cruncher. It's what I have in many of my systems. I think even 4GB would be enough, but it is impossible to get dual channel as 2GB DDR4 modules don't exist, and you really want dual channel. 16GB is only required if you do really heavy workloads or play the latest modern games.

Thanks,

Logan

I've got a i7-9700K after my old i7-2600K died.
With so many years difference, their performance is obviously vastly different. Not only because the general higher GHz, processor cache, memory speed, but also because 2600K didn't support FMA3 instructions yet. The new ones do since few generations, of course, and that's a huge boost for LLR and Genefer subprojects.

However, you should note that thinking back I maybe would have gone for i7-8700K rather than the 9700K. The 9700K is surely somewhat more powerful, but a lot more hot and power-hungry. The pro-con ratio would rather be in favor of 8700K for me.

Has anyone compared an AMD Threadripper 2990WX with an Intel Core i9-7980XE at LLR'ing?

No hands on experience but I can extrapolate somewhat based on lesser CPUs.

2990WX is 32 cores at 3.0 GHz base, 4.2 GHz turbo. I haven't been able to establish what the all core turbo speed is.

7980XE is 18 cores at 2.6 GHz base, 4.2 GHz turbo, with an all core turbo of 3.4 GHz. (assuming no AVX offset, which would lower it)

Zen cores are approximately half the throughput of Intel cores in this use case. In peak performance, the 2990WX would have to run around 3.8 GHz to equal the Intel (assuming no AVX offset, which would lower it).

The 2990WX is organised as 4 dies of 8 cores, and generally speaking when running multi-threaded, you want to keep workloads together on the same die. Optimum performance would be limited to tasks that do not exceed the cache on each die to avoid needing to talk across dies. 4 tasks are run simultaneously, one on each die. As such, the limited ram bandwidth from only having 4 channels isn't too critical here as you want to avoid hitting ram - some dies do not have direct access to ram and have to go through the other dies.

The 7980XE being a single die could scale to higher thread counts, within the limitations of the software. Past experience has shown that good thread scaling doesn't go on forever so you might not want to run all 18 cores on one task. Depending on the task you could try 2x9, 3x6 or other combinations. When running multiple tasks, there will still need to be consideration of overall cache requirements, which if exceeded would then rely on ram bandwidth. The cache size should allow up to a total of 3M FFT size before hitting ram.

I don't know their relative costs, but if I were offered one of these for LLR, I'd pick the 7980XE because it would be easier to use. If sieve is your thing though, the 2990WX should destroy the Intel.

Future consideration, Prime95 is starting to support AVX-512, where needs some more polish before it goes mainstream. In time, that library would eventually be rolled into LLR and the Intel CPU would gain "up to" a factor of 2 peak performance increase. Actually a bit less than that as clocks will be less when running AVX-512. On that note, there is probably an AVX offset I didn't consider previously so it would be running less than the all core clock stated, and similarly the 2990WX would not need as much clock to match the Intel.

the 7980XE is around 10% more expensive than the 2990WX. at least if you get ohn 7980XE, because there are no avaible.
in contrast you can get 2990WX everywhere. at least in germany.

so. If the 7980XE would be avaible they have a similar pricing (you have to pay 50 euros more for a TR4-MoBo then for a 2066-MoBo) and your assumtion that LLR suits the 7980XE better and sieve the 2990WX, then you could buy what you need for your workload.

but again. you simply can't buy the 7980XE...but I can buy a 2990WX just by walking through the City ^^

7980XE is last gen and had been succeeded by 9980XE. Not believed to be much different apart from Intel now solder it to the IHS so better out of box thermals.

the 9980XE ist 30-40% more expensive as a 2990WX (if you look at stores which have him avaible. if you are willig to wait longer than only 30%)
