I am using a HP Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz. No GPU. I run only PrimeGrid work units, PPSE (LLR) 6.15, PPS (LLR) 6.22, & The Riesel Problem (Sieve) 1.12

Overheating has always been a concern so I use Core Temp and have the machine shut down automatically at 86C.

For months I had no problem with only an occasional automatic shut down. For the last month or so something has changed. In spite of having my preferences set to use 50% of the processors 40% of the time I am having automatic shutdowns almost daily. Sometimes the problem will occur while am at the machine and a quick look at Core Temp indicates a Load on the cores of 100% and steady. Task Manager shows no applications running to place the load and if I pause Boinc tasks the problem goes away. It is sort of like Boinc suddenly forgets the preferences and allows PrimeGrid to run wild.

I have cleaned the air ports and confirmed that the variable speed fans are running. I have added a cooling pad for the laptop with 2 fans and have small fan also blowing across the whole thing. Note that the 50/40 preference on the cores is a reduction from previous settings in a vain attempt to solve the problem.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.

LLR and Genefer are torture tests for CPUs. They consume a lot of power, and run very hot. This is doubly true with the newer AVX CPUs.

I'd suggest running either PPS Sieve or TRP sieve on your laptop, and staying away from LLR. The sieves run a lot cooler. You might even be able to run those 100% of the time, on all cores, without having heating problems. (And if you do have problems running the sieves, definitely stay away from LLR and Genefer.)

Your CPU has a TJMax of 100 degrees, the simplest solution is to just remove the auto-shutdown, it's unnecessary.

I would take Michael's advice. Also I've found that running PSA Primorial sieve is even "colder" than TRP Sieve. I wouldn't run PPS Sieve on a CPU because it's just a waste of CPU time, the sieve runs way quicker on a GPU.

And don't forget to vacuum the laptop once a month or more often if necessary.

Also you can check if you can adjust CPU voltage in BIOS or if you can increase fans speed there.

I'm using Throttle Stop for my old Core2 Duo laptop which is really helping to reduce the heat. Not sure if the software supports modern CPUs.

Cheers.
