Hi, I joined procject recently and have a problem with gpu. I don't get any tasks.

My card is Radeon HD8750M and is detected as OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: Oland (driver version 1348.5 (VM), device version OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (1348.5), 1024MB, 1024MB available, 396 GFLOPS peak)

it works in collatz conjecture and einstein@home, but i don't get any primegrid tasks (for GPU). Other computers receive gpu WUs normally, so i assume it's a problem with this particular machine. But don't know how to fix it.

Please help :)

Not sure but when I look at your list of pc's I see this for one of your gpu's:
CAL AMD Radeon HD 6570/6670/7570/7670 series (Turks) (1024MB) driver: 1.4.1703

But when I look at your Oland one I see this:
CAL Oland (1024MB)

Meaning I don't see a driver loaded that PrimeGrid is recognizing, that could be your problem.

You need a cc_config.xml and define all GPUs

<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>

If you remove the line with the <?xml... tag, does it work? I don't think that would break anything, but I've never seen anyone put an xml header in that file before, so I'm not sure.

Previously I had driver delivered with my pc. Now i have newest one. Still same situation. In boinc manager's event log driver is recognized as 1348.5m (VM), on website is like you said...

If you run a VM it doesnt support any GPU (CUDA/OpenCL).

Problem is that I don't run VM. It's just an entry about GPU in event's log.

When I make the file, and try to read afterward, it appears with that first line although I did not write it...

Use Notepad to make the file NOT a word processing program, WP programs add stuff to the file and it won't work. Save it as a 'txt type file' with the xml extension, when Notepad complains say it is okay. Save the file in the c:\program data\boinc folder(for 64bit windows), exit out of Boinc and then restart it and post the top few lines of Boincs event log here that say whether it successfully read the file or not.

I have no idea why but I have seen it both ways, it does look funky when it is separated by a space though.

I noticed that most of people have two gpu entries in log. For ATI GPU it's something similar to:

CAL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: (...) OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: (...)

I have only the second (opencl) one, like i said in first post. Maybe this is the problem? I have the newest driver from AMD site.

That is likely the problem. PrimeGrid GPU WUs don't need CAL, but for some reason they request it regardless. Michael has said he's going to fix this after the competition. Newer (Radeon HD 8xxx and R9 2xx) AMD GPUs don't have CAL, so PrimeGrid doesn't send them WUs.

As far as I know, the only way to force them to receive WUs is to manually download the .exe for the task you want to run, and edit app_info.xml in the PrimeGrid data folder in C:/ProgramData/BOINC. I'm not an expert on this (it's a miracle my 8730M is running at all), so I'll let someone else dump the relevant XML.

I don't think that I said it would be fixed after the challenge. What I said, here and here, was that it wouldn't be fixed before the challenge. I never said anything about when, or even if, it would be fixed. It's not entirely clear how or even if it can be fixed at this time.

Also, I was speaking about the 290 GPUs. This is the first I've heard that any other GPU might have the same problem.

This is the post I was reading that made me think you knew vaguely how to fix it.

This is, in theory, easy to fix. I need to change a configuration file on the server and the fix should be effective immediately for new tasks that are sent out. I could make that change right now

Also, I was speaking about the 290 GPUs. This is the first I've heard that any other GPU might have the same problem.

My messages to you (both last week and 8 months ago) were about the 8730M, which is in the same line as bolu$trolu$'s 8750M. The issues appear to apply to all AMD GPUs without CAL but with OpenCL.

IF you can do it manually the project should be able to do it on their end instead. They recognize each gpu we have now so could setup a small script to do x when a 7970 gpu is attached, a y when your 8750m is attached. Since most gpu's would use the x configuration it shouldn't be that hard to mirco-manage the rest, especially as there is a manual work around that does work. I wouldn't guess that AMD/ATI is going to suddenly revert to adding the CAL function back into their gpu's, so it should be an easy y configuration that should last a long time.

Thanks for explanation. At least i know what is wrong. when i have some time, I will try to run primegrid applications manually.

That's a misunderstanding that people have been repeating over and over, and it's as far from the truth as it can possibly be.

There's no easy fix on the server side for this problem, and we don't have a plan for fixing it yet. It's a problem that's only going to get worse, and it needs to be fixed, but there's absolutely no time frame for when or even if that's going to happen.

Thanks for explanation. At least i know what is wrong. when i have some time, I will try to run primegrid applications manually.

For the record, here's what I did:

I placed this app_info.xml in the PrimeGrid ProgramData directory:

<app_info> <app> <name>genefer</name> <user_friendly_name>Genefer</user_friendly_name> </app> <file_info> <name>primegrid_genefer_3_1_2_7_2.10_windows_intelx86__atiGFN.exe</name> <executable/> </file_info> <app_version> <app_name>genefer</app_name> <version_num>210</version_num> <api_version>7.0.64</api_version> <avg_ncpus>1.000000</avg_ncpus> <max_ncpus>1.000000</max_ncpus> <file_ref> <file_name>primegrid_genefer_3_1_2_7_2.10_windows_intelx86__atiGFN.exe</file_name> <main_program/> </file_ref> <platform>windows_intelx86</platform> <coproc> <type>ATI</type> <count>1.000000</count> </coproc> </app_version> </app_info>

I then downloaded this .exe, and renamed it to "primegrid_genefer_3_1_2_7_2.10_windows_intelx86__atiGFN.exe", and placed it in the ProgramData folder.

Upon two force-updates of PrimeGrid, it worked.

Note that this will only work for the Genefer sub-project and you'll need to have separate <app> entries for PPS Sieve and Genefer WR tasks to run those (as well as downloading+renaming those .exes).[/code]

<app_info> ... <file_info> <name>primegrid_genefer_3_1_2_7_2.10_windows_intelx86__atiGFN.exe</name> <executable/> </file_info> ... <file_ref> <file_name>primegrid_genefer_3_1_2_7_2.10_windows_intelx86__atiGFN.exe</file_name> </app_info>

I then downloaded this .exe, and renamed it to "primegrid_genefer_3_1_2_7_2.10_windows_intelx86__atiGFN.exe", and placed it in the ProgramData folder.

Might I suggest a better strategy?

Either use the beta apps AND the beta app name (geneferocl-windows-x86.exe is the app you linked to) in the app_info file, OR download primegrid_genefer_3_1_2_7_2.10_windows_intelx86__atiGFN.exe directly from the http://www.primegrid.com/download/ directory?

Downloading the latest beta app and then renaming it to have the filename of a specific version, which might be different than what the actual version is, is asking for confusion down the line. It's never a good thing to have misnamed files.

FWIW, when I use app_info, I put the short name (e.g., geneferocl-windows-x86.exe) in app_info rather than use the large unwieldy names used by BOINC. That makes it clear whether the exe is something I'm using for app_info, or if it was an automatic download from the server.

Another reason that approach is better is that if you use the server's name, and then turn off app_info, the server will likely overwrite the executable. If you then switch back to app_info, you won't be using the executable you were before, and you might not know it. That's another source of possible confusion.

At the time I was just doing whatever I could to get it working, and the app I downloaded was the first one I found. It seems to work fine, so I shall leave it for the duration of the contest, but I'll make sure to fix that up later.

FWIW, when I use app_info, I put the short name (e.g., geneferocl-windows-x86.exe) in app_info rather than use the large unwieldy names used by BOINC. That makes it clear whether the exe is something I'm using for app_info, or if it was an automatic download from the server.

Good idea, I shall do that in the future.
