Hi

I am fairly new to PG and still getting the 'hang' of things. On average, a PPS LLR WU takes me roughly 30 - 40 minutes to complete. However, i currently have a PPS (LLR) task showing 22+ hours remaining. Moreover, it has been running for about an hour now with only about 10% progress. Just thought id ask :)

Thank you

Hi Rynaldo and welcome! :)

First off: BOINC guestimates of how long a task will take are notoriously inaccurate. A better guestimate is to have the task run to 5% or 10% and then multiply the time it took to get there by 20 or 10 respectively.

How long a task takes is dependent on what task you are running in combination with how fast your system is. Recent intel CPU's have an instructionset called AVX which significantly speeds up the calculation.

Is there possibly some other process eating up your CPU time?

Thank you for the rapid response !

I did exactly that :) The PPS llr task is now on 20% (1.35 hours) so x 5 will give me +- 7 hours completion time. What i don't understand is why this task is taking this long where generally (at least since i started crunching) , took me an average of 40 minutes max to complete a PPS LLR !

I have a few PCs crunching. The one in question : Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 330 @ 2.13GHz [Family 6 Model 37 Stepping 2] = 4 Processor

There are 4 tasks running on my client (full 100% CPU usage shared between these 4 tasks). This said, there is nothing else running or using the CPU from what i can see.

This is probably no big deal though :) Was just wondering why it's taking so long compare to all of the PPS llr tasks i have done before.

Thank you

Taking a quick look at your machines, i see that you get both the PPS and PPSE tasks.
PPSE tasks finish a lot faster than PPS tasks!

Maybe thats the problem?

Hi :)

Correct! I get both the PPS and PPSE LLR and generally the PPSE completes faster than the PPS here. Guess i am just not 'familiar' with seeing a PPS take this long hehe. Could this even be a problem at all (potentially) ?

PPS is supposed to take longer than PPSE :) The E (for extended) searches much smaller numbers, which makes it a lot easier to test them for primality. Not sure though if the ~30 minutes versus ~7 hours is completely normal though, haven't been running PPS(E) for a while now myself.

I do believe that this is not normal.. For me, PPS LLR Extended take 5-8 minutes, and PPS LLR take 20-30 minutes i believe. I do not think a ratio of 40min ~ 7 hours is correct..

I looked at that task and there's nothing unusual with it.

A others have said, PPS runs a little bit longer than PPSE, but it should only be about 2 hours, not 20. Almost certainly, there's something else running on your computer that is consuming the CPU cycles.

Thank you

There are 10 tasks (from different sub-projects) on that computer. Can you post the full task name of the 20 hour task?

The task name is pps_llr_207887629_0 (7 hour +- WU). Just trying to get a better understanding of things. Still learning :)

I looked at that task and there's nothing unusual with it.

A others have said, PPS runs a little bit longer than PPSE, but it should only be about 2 hours, not 20. Almost certainly, there's something else running on your computer that is consuming the CPU cycles.

Weird hehe ..

The only thing i can find is the following (in my task manager):

primegrid.cllr.exe Tracey 24 primegrid.cllr.exe
primegrid.cllr.exe Tracey 03 primegrid.cllr.exe
primegrid.cllr.exe Tracey 12 primegrid.cllr.exe
primegrid.cllr.exe Tracey 25 primegrid.cllr.exe

Perhaps a restart ?

Thank you for taking the time to look into this for me Michael ! Much appreciated !

There you have it :) Two tasks are running at full speed (24/25), one is running at half speed (12) and the last one is just chilling out, having a cold one (03) ;)

This means other processes are using your CPU. Also, it's a fairly common phenomenon to see that having LLR tasks on all cores slows them down. Someone who actually knows the correct technical lingo to describe why that is can probably do so better than me ;) I believe it was something to do with the cache on your cpu.
All in all, I know on my rig it doesn't matter much if I run three or four LLR tasks at the same time. At the end of the day (or week) I'll have completed the same amount of tasks (or in some cases even more when running three).

Make sure you click on "Show processes from all users". The task that's using one of your cores is probably running under another user name, most likely System.

Thanks a million Michael ! Did as you suggested and found that NT Kernel (system) was using around 25+ of the CPU ! There was no way i could kill the task so updated a few drivers and restarted, and voila ! PG now on all 4 cores :)

Windows runs a LOT of processes in the background, and it's not necessarily a good idea to kill them just because you're not familiar with what they're doing. It's much better to research what the task's purpose is, and if it's not something that you want running, disable it via the appropriate controls.
