In chat with a few people around the Web it dawned on me that the existence of the "Robocopy" command (no quotes), is not well known, and copying was going on taking zillions of time.

Stats below are with a i7-3960x

Robocopy was introduced by Microsoft with Win 7, it does NOT work with earlier versions. It is an EXTREMELY fast copying utility. A test I did just before writing this so I could quote "live" stuff, copied 3.1Gb in 17 seconds .....

On that copy session, DOS reported the transfer as 179,435,063 Bytes per sec .... or 10267.356 Mega Bytes/min.

So, to Robocopy a Disc of 100Gb would take me around 9mins 20secs (not days ....)

The above example times are with an i7-3960x running the command inside a DOS box, so scale according to processor you have. Its still blindingly fast, whatever way you cut it, whatever processor you have, compared to other copy commands.

The Robocopy command will use Multi-Threading, hence the speed. Some of the command options need a little Focus by the user as the syntax is different from classic DOS commands - but the result is well worth the investment of time.

The full Robocopy command set can be seen at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robocopy

Run, don't walk to get up to speed on Robocopy if you are not aware of it (and have Win V7 as a minimum) ..... :)

Make sure you read the guide properly ....... DONT assume the Syntax is like all other MS copy-like commands, it's not - READ THE WIKI ARTICLE QUOTED ABOVE

Robocopy was introduced by Microsoft with Win 7, it does NOT work with earlier versions. It is an EXTREMELY fast copying utility.

Started using Robocopy years ago - I believe it was introduced in Windows 2003 togerther with Resource Kit. Actually, I'm still using it on some W2K3 server.
There are many version of Robocopy, some of them work well with Win XP, some of them work well with Win7.

Anyway, it is a great utility for fast copying with a bunch of useful switches.

Its the multi-threading that makes all the difference - as I understand it they introduced multi-threading with Win 7.

Totally agree re its utility - its a "must have" utility, excellent stuff :)

While it obviously has some nice features, I'm struggling to see how it can be any faster than a normal copy on a system that is limited by disk speed?

A quick test on my system showed both copy and robocopy took 40s to transfer a 1gb folder on a single disk and 10s each on an 8-disk raid6.

Cant directly compare single disc performance with a RAID array :)

However even comparing against a RAID array time of 10 secs for 1Gb, against a "standard" single disc (etc) Robocopy of 3.1Gb in 17 secs shows how fast the utility is - even outpacing an 8 disc RAID array.

"Horses for Courses" as they say. But the performance increase for a standard user setup is clear, when it outpaces even a full blown 8 disc RAID array.

you've misunderstood.

robocopy - single disc to single disc = 40s
copy - single disc to single disc = 40s

robocopy - raid to raid = 10s
copy - raid to raid = 10s

ie NO difference between copy and robocopy

robocopy - raid to raid = 10s
copy - raid to raid = 10s

No misunderstanding .... Because both your examples are Raid to Raid. As you pointed out, when run in non RAID it was considerably slower

Not all have RAID, so to write it off for all is not correct.

As to times .... my data example 3.1Gb in 17 secs is way faster than the speed you quote for similar copies (1Gb in 10 secs, or to rebase it to 3Gb, that's 30 secs nearly twice as slow even with RAID assistence)

Also that was 40secs for 1Gb non RAID, rebase that to 3Gb and you get 120 secs, compared to my 17 secs (non RAID)

Such a stark difference cannot be attributed just to Processor (or to RAID) - a 3960x maybe faster than yours, but its not 6 times as fast by a long chalk. Therefore the obvious speed difference is down to the software ability to run multi threads - in my case 10 of them. However even compare the RAID time for 1Gb rebased to a 3Gb task equivalent to mine, its still twice as slow.

Its possible less threads run in your processor explains the speed difference, my times are with 10 virtual CPUs and I run SSDs with a zero data access time ... but for sure, for those not running a RAID at all (the vast majority) will see vast improvements .... even so, mine still ran it twice as fast without RAID assistance.

The speed improvement of mine is not so stark compared to yours, its only twice as fast as yours, but those without RAID will see a vast improvement on their normal copy times.

you really are misunderstanding.

I've tried robocopy and found it to be NO FASTER than normal copy.

that was tested using raid, normal hd and SSD. I tried it with no multithreading and 2/4/8 threads on a 2600K and an i7 970 using windows 7x64. On the single hd multithreading took over twice as long as without.

Also that was 40secs for 1Gb non RAID, rebase that to 3Gb and you get 120 secs, compared to my 17 secs (non RAID)

yes, but you're using SSD which is just a tad faster than a normal hd and your write speed is only about half of what the latest SSDs are capable of.

The command I used was
robocopy <dir1> <dir2> /mt:x (where x=2/4/8)

Am I missing something here?

No I am rofl :) ..... like using it properly. Apologies I had a major brain meltdown above .... lets start again :)

Go here:

http://www.mydigitallife.info/microsoft-robocopy-gui-free-download/

Load the app, use the /S and /COPYALL switches, run it, don't change a thing, just enter target and destination directory.

I've run it 4 or 5 times to make sure that - this time - I got it right.

I pressed run in the app, looked up at the screen, and its done - that was 1 second at most for 3Gb copy, probably less than a second.

I pressed run in the app, looked up at the screen, and its done - that was 1 second at most for 3Gb copy, probably less than a second.

you do realise it's only copying the file table in that time and that the actual copy is running as a background task? Either that we've both got magic disks that can write multiple GB/s. If you don't believe me, try it with a network drive.

Robocopy is great for moving big data around in memory, but once hardware limitations are met (such as measuring the time to actually load disk into machine, write it and take it out) there will be very little difference.

The key point here is that moving around memory can include moving into drive dedicated spaces which is faster so the CPU can get on with other things while the physical drive does its stuff.

Both the confused views above are therefore true, It depends on what you mean by time, time taken to fully complete the task or CPU time to do the task and leave the rest to peripherals.

The real kicker for me is with Robocopy I have much more control over copying NTFS attributes - when you get into the advanced switches there is quite a bit of power lurking there. If your just copying a straight folder or two there probably isn't much of an advantage to using Robocopy. But if you are doing any kind of moving files AND their permissions, or leveraging some of robocopy's synchronization features then it can really be a godsend...

It is also significantly more efficient than the Windows Explorer copy as well as the plain old copy or xcopy... on a few files it may not be noticeable, but if you are moving terabytes around it can literally shave hours off of long copy jobs. Just depends on your needs and what you are doing. I use the synchronization features all the time to backup my laptop to the server since our domain admins can't be bothered to leverage offline files and folder redirection. Yes, I know it was a nightmare with Windows XP but as with most Microsoft things, the third time is the charm and in Windows 8 they really do work well :p
