Can anyone help me understand the error in the following:

<core_client_version>6.10.58</core_client_version>

The task is one of many PPS sieves I've run. Many finish successfully, many error out with similar errors. I haven't been able to determine any differences in state or use of the machine between successful and non successful tasks. If it helps it's a i7-950 with Widows 7-64 and a GTX 285.

Thanks,

Jay

Hi, Jay. You're the first person I've heard of that noticed that error message - though it's a relatively common one - so you're the first one I can ask about the problem.

First question: Does your machine appear to have two GPU tasks in the "running" state at once? I've assumed in the past that device 0 would be the emulator and device 1 would be the actual GPU, and that BOINC would attempt to run one task on each; but I may be wrong about that.

Second question: Do you have the CUDA SDK installed? That's likely what's causing the issue. Actually, if you install a later version of the SDK (3.x, I think), the emulator should not exist.

Third question: Can you upgrade your drivers? That might help.

Good luck, and let me know what you find!

Hi, Jay. You're the first person I've heard of that noticed that error message - though it's a relatively common one - so you're the first one I can ask about the problem.

Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate the assistance.

First question: Does your machine appear to have two GPU tasks in the "running" state at once? I've assumed in the past that device 0 would be the emulator and device 1 would be the actual GPU, and that BOINC would attempt to run one task on each; but I may be wrong about that.

I've never noticed more than one GPU task with a "Running" status at one time. I've never paid real close attention though either. I will attempt to keep an eye on things in the future. Currently, it's a single task.

Second question: Do you have the CUDA SDK installed? That's likely what's causing the issue. Actually, if you install a later version of the SDK (3.x, I think), the emulator should not exist.

I'm not aware of any installation of the CUDA SDK. It doesn't show up in the list of installed software provided in Add/Remove Programs.

Third question: Can you upgrade your drivers? That might help.

Current installed driver version lists as 258.96. Per Nvidia website the current available is 266.58. I will certainly download and install the newer version.

Good luck, and let me know what you find!

Thanks again, I'll try and post an update of any noticed changes.

I'm able to reproduce the error. It occurs when a second user is logged on the computer. The easy workaround is to make sure the other accounts are logged off, but that's not going to always be quick and easy to enforce. Any other suggestions for avoiding the error?

Thanks,

Jay

You're talking about the Windows "Switch User" function? Not logging out and logging in as a second user, but logging into the second user while the first one is still logged in?

If that's what's happening, that's a known limitation of Windows -- you can't use GPU processing with Remote Desktop or Switch User. Both of them abstract the desktop and totally bork the CUDA interface.

My advice is to disable the Switch User feature altogether, thus forcing users to log out completely. That should prevent the problem in the future.

Aha! Thanks, Jay - now I know what's going on, at least. It's a known issue. The best known fix, so far, is to use VNC instead.

For now I'll ask the one other user to try and be sure to log out when finished. I'll look into disabling the feature if necessary.

Thanks for the quick answer and suggestion.

Certainly doable as an alternative to Remote Desktop.

The task is one of many PPS sieves I've run. Many finish successfully, many error out with similar errors. I haven't been able to determine any differences in state or use of the machine between successful and non successful tasks. If it helps it's a i7-950 with Widows 7-64 and a GTX 285.
