Hello!
I've been focusing on biological projects for a while and have returned - because...I guess I wanted something different.
I was looking through the message boards and came across some of my old watched topics - not only did they give great advice but I saw a post from someone who, at the time, recommended me on over here.
So here I am - returning after over 2 years!
Hope all are well and crunching.
I will be adding about 82 real cores to the project (since if I remember right hyperthreading/SMT is highly discouraged). Not much on the GPU side unfortunately, rx570 and gtx 1050TI.

Hey wolfman1360 !!

Welcome to the team and thanks for joining :)

That's a lot of cores!

With new-ish LLR2 you should do quite well, so you timed it just right. They all be 1sts.

Hope you have fun ;)

For now, I think the higher ish end hardware, including i5-3570, will start with PPS-DIV, SOB, SR5, TRP. Not sure if that is a good combo or not.

Probably best to set up the primegrid preferences for each type and associate computers to single type of project.

Small i.e. ppse and sgs, need no cache. All other llr2 project on cpu can have a cache as there's no race condition for 1st place. But I recommend no cache at all.

There's a challenge starting 14th for SOB (huge tasks) if you're interested. There's about a week left of PPS-DIV. 4% left so that has a lot of interest at the moment.

But all are your choice. On front page the bigger the size, the harder to find. Rule of thumb. Double the digits, is ten times harder. ( I think 🤔) 🤣

I should have guessed with that amount of hardware. Seasoned cruncher :)

It took me ages to get up to speed, you'll obviously be very comfortable quite quickly :)

Nice one. ;)

Oh no no I am by far still not up to speed.
All I know so far is the PPSE and SGS are meant to be ran singly and I think everything else can be multithreaded.
I think I might just follow the example you gave and start with one project for CPU type. About to get the 4790 going.

My default profile just has 1 job set at once with 1 CPU so that I can quickly change up profiles without cache being a factor.
I'm not sure how I want to proceed, if primes are that important to me or not. It would be nice to get some I guess.

Edit: Just looked at your machines, I was going to follow the example and just run similar projects. You must have one instance of Boinc per CPU core, goodness that's a lot of processing power lol.

Lol, most of it is TSC. I've lost a lot of hardware recently so Ive about ten PCs left. Going to try get some fixed over the next few months.

Would you recommend tsc for the upcoming challenge, given the new cores are almost 3x the price when running the premium ones?
A shame. It would be nice to have a few avx512.
Also forgot to change cache settings and jobs sent, so here we are with a bunch of short tasks and a day of cache. Changed everything to 0 as quick as I could. Oh well.

oops having read the other thread it appears you already know your stuff ;D

Oh well.

I would have recommended TSC but not since this recent development. PG doesn't mind if you abort tasks, they'll be recycled immediately so its fine to abort. I'll be powering down all TSC soon.

Oh! Well that helps.
Just aborted a ton of short tasks, here we go to see how I fair here overnight.
No idea if I'm going over the cache limit. I guess we'll see.
Still not entirely sure how to read that.

Well? How are you settling in Wolfman?

Getting the hang of it?

I think I remember your name from another project.... were you on Seti?

Ah I can check.. yep, or no maybe it was Collatz? not sure.

Anyway ask away for any support questions you have.

We're here to help.... if we can :P

So far so good, I think...yes, I was on Seti, am for a lot of my projects but I just forgot to check the forum for 2 years. ;) Life and work got in the way of much crunching and so I was just crunching WCG and Rosetta.
Got WW on the loan little rx570 and the CPUs are crunching away on LLR sieve, I think those are the ones that don't have many days left.
Question for these SOB tasks that are coming up for this next challenge, though.
What would you recommend for efficiency and to get the most done? I have a few processor types...
A few i5 ivy bridges, I'm assuming just keep them pegged at 100^ so 1 task with 4 cores.
i7 sandy bridge and Haswells, 1 x 4 core workunits?
An old Dual Opteron 6128...can I get away with 2x 8 core workunits or should I keep it at 16 where it is now?
My ryzens...I was told in another thread that 2x 3 or 4 core workunits was better than 1 8, is it the same for this?
Apart from that, not much else for cores apart from my old Xeon 5520, core 2 duo, and Ivy bridge i7 laptop. Might even get my really nice machine out with 8750h (but I don't think it supports avx512 anyway so might not). I hate crunching on things that I can't remove the battery easily.
After the challenge really not sure what to focus on. There are so many subprojects it's a bit overwelming. Do different projects work better on different processors or is it about the same regardless of what I choose?
