The Alan Turing challenge made me think about getting a cheap GPU to efficiently crunch GFN tasks, maybe AP-27.

I don't want to spend a lot, would the GTX 1030 be a good choice? It goes for 70€ around here.

It is low power, both in the power consumption sense, and compute power sense. I mean, it'll work, but may be so slow as not to be really worth it.

I have a few of these, but I wouldn't use them for anything other than GFN15, and even then they're pretty slow now... If I remember correctly, and it has been a while since I've run one so I might be wrong, an AP27 task takes about 90 minutes with them, so you're not particularly likely to get first.

I would say that if you can get an inexpensive GTX 1650 that would probably be your best bet at a low-priced but somewhat-competitive card. Just make sure that your motherboard supports a 75Watt draw on the pcie x16 slot, that you have enough room in your case for the card and be aware that some GTX 1650 cards also need a 6-pin power connector.

An alternative strategy would be to wait and see if the next generation of Nvidia graphics cards has a GTX 3030 offering or similar. Nvidia is due to release a low-power GPU sometime soon, as the 1030 is now over 3 years old, which was the gap between it and the GT 730.

Good luck!

I wouldn't mind if the WUs take a while, but if the "first percentage" is really low, of course that's no real fun.

How low would it be though? Something like 1/3 first would be enough for my taste.

Is the GPU crunching that much more competitive than CPU here? I get almost 50% first with an i3-2120 on SGS and 25% on PPS-DIV. I assumed a 1030 would perform similarly in the GFN-17 or 18 WUs.

edit: I browsed some GFN-18 results and apparently even with a 1070 you're 2nd more than half of the time. So it's probably not worth it to buy a cheap card just for crunching.

I have a GT1030 here that I bought mostly just to be a backup card for my main computer if its card died so I could at least still use the computer.
For challenges I haul it out to give a little boost in the standings (sometimes it gets me 1-2 spots ahead), but otherwise I don't use it unless it's winter and there's a next badge nearby.

It was quite decent for its power draw when it first came out, but that was 3 years ago and things have moved on. These days you're right about the 1070's 1st rate and the 1070 is about 4x faster than the 1030 in pretty much everything PG related. I have a 1070ti (a little faster than a regular 1070) and am getting about a 62% 1st rate on GFN17-Mega. I also have a 1050ti running, which is directly between a 1030 and a 1070ti in performance, that is running around a 56% 1st rate. However, the 1030 would likely fall off into the 20's to 30's at best.
Keep in mind that these rates are highly variable depending on whether someone concentrates a datacenter worth of GPUs on a project or not.

Unlike other used or lower cost cards a 1030 will crunch every type of project here. AP requires 2GB of VRAM. You can use a 1.5GB card, but I think that required some app_info.xml trickery to get going. So if you plan on running AP get a card with 2GB of VRAM or larger.

BRUH.
Is it memory bandwidth limits or is my Vega 8 just too bad? AP27 takes freaking 16 hours to complete......
But I agree with GTX1650. It's a fine card for its price. If you have more money you'd consider RX5500XT too.

Also, I'm hoping for something like RTX 3030 or RTX 3050Ti too!
(Nvidia says RTX for everyone and that's why I marked RTX on both low-end cards)

You are comparing a dedicated graphics card versus an integrated one. Not only is it constrained to a laptop's thermals, it also shares all its memory bandwidth with the CPU.

But I agree with GTX1650. It's a fine card for its price. If you have more money you'd consider RX5500XT too.

If you're buying a GPU solely for crunching and have no preference for which brand to buy from, Nvidia cards are usually slightly better at performing compute tasks while AMD cards have slightly better Linux driver support.

20-30% would be quite sufficient for my taste, the card is relatively cheap after all.

More than 50% as for your 1050ti would be great, but I'm not sure I want to spend 150€ just for crunching GFN. I'm more interested in the conjecture projects.

Is there any way to sort for users who have a 1030 and see their results?

Yes, from that list it doesn't seem too bad, but it doesn't really tell you whether you only get 5% first or 50%.

I know double-checking is absolutely necessary, but to buy a card just to do double-checking seems a bit boring. :) As I said, 25-30% 1st would be ok, from what Keith wrote it seems this can be expected with the 1030, but seeing some real stats would be nice.

There's a line from a movie that comes to mind. A woman is taking a male teenager shopping for clothes, and he's not sure if he likes something or not.

She says, "Well, one thing I know about shopping is that if you don't absolutely love it in the store, you won't wear it. The store is where you like it best. So before you choose something, think of yourself wearing it and say to yourself: Is this me?"

The same concept may apply here. If you don't LOVE the idea of buying a 1030, don't buy it. Starting the day after you buy it, the 1030 will be getting slower and slower, and your 1st percentages will drop and drop and continue to drop. This is because everyone is continually upgrading what they have. If you start off with a slow GPU, while its raw performance will remain the same, its relative performance as compared to everyone else will degrade. At best, the 1030 will barely meet your criteria today of having a "reasonable" first percentage.

That percentage will only get worse as time goes on.

To me, it sounds like you're trying to convince yourself into buying into "planned obsolescence." My advice is to resist the temptation and wait until you can afford something that's a *little* more future proof.

Add to that the Nvidia 30?? gpu series cards are due out soon with another guessed @20% jump over the 2070/2080 series cards and the 1030 will be less and less likely to be 1st as often. Also as the 30?? series gpu's come out people will move up from their 10?? series cards to the then less expensive 20?? series making the 1030 a much cheaper card than it is right now. And YES people will buy the 30?? series gpu's for crunching!!!

Ah well... the sheer amount of $$$ and electricity thrown into this seemingly useless project!

That's a good analogy Michael, but I'm really open to any outcome. If it would produce a 1st rate of 20-30% for 1-2 years, to me that's worth the 70€. Especially as otherwise I cannot reasonably do GFN/AP at all.

wait until you can afford something that's a *little* more future proof.
It's not that I cannot afford it, I just don't want to spend a lot of money just for GFN/AP. If I was into PC gaming, it's be a different thing, but both computers are at work and would not benefit from the card at all. Or if SoB or TRP could run on GPU it might also be a different situation.

I was planning to buy two, though, so it probably better to spend 150€ on one card.

So the general verdict is to wait for next gen nvidia card? Hopefully, nobody will tell me by then to wait for a 4xxx ... :)

If there was a RTX 3030, go for that. If there isn't, the GTX1650 would pretty much be $100 by the time Ampere is out. So we'll see in September.
For the last sentence, we won't, since that's another two years :)

Everything in computers is outdated the minute you walk out of the storewith it!! The key is to buy as good as you can afford at the time and then save your money for the next time you can upgrade. LOTS of us buy used parts because of that, like you are thinking about, giving us a better bang for our buck but never actually being on the cutting edge of technology. SOME people have resrouces and connections to get the latest and greatest and end up being the guinea pigs for the different projects to figure out to make them work.

The AMD 5700 gpu is a good example people had them as soon as they came out but only a few projects had then working right away while others took a bit. Remember crunching is not the gpu makers market, gamers are so even the latest drivers don't always work for us.
