My GPU WUs take a long time and frequently fail, and I think I've narrowed it down to nVidia's "boost" mode. I've tried several things, including nVidia's myriad tools, MSI Afterburner, and a few other software tools I'm now forgetting. None of them have allowed me to disable boost mode or adjust/limit clock speed in any sensible way. I've been avoiding messing with the BIOS just because of the risk factor.

Any suggestions on how to do this? If going the BIOS route is the only way, can you recommend a good tutorial/walkthrough?

Not sure the bios is your issue. With afterburner you should be able to underclock you card. Try that before messing with the bios. I have a couple that I had to underclock by quite a bit.

Cheers

Thanks! Any thoughts on what the solution might be if Afterburner allows me adjust maximum temp but not maximum clock speed? (Beyond admin mode, fresh install, driver updates, and rebooting)

Not completely sure what you mean. A couple of things with afterburner. There may be a setting somewhere in the advanced user settings that you tell it to allow you to make overrides (sorry not on a system with afterburner installed so I can't point to a specific place at the moment). Also, there is a "link" on the main page of the gpu screen that allows you to unlink the temp/core/power settings that then allow you to change those independently. As for adjusting to higher than normal on either the temp, power or core be careful because there will be a fine line you can cross when the tasks start to error out. From your original question you want to under clock not over clock to begin with.

I've also noticed that as you adjust and apply you might not see the card setting change. Sometimes it takes increments of more than 10 to make it work. But again be careful when doing so. I would also allow more than 1 task to run at the "new" setting to make sure it will work as I've overclocked and an hour later had tasks fail.

Cheers
