Greetings Folks!

As a gift from my brother I have received an i5-760 CPU/motherboard/RAM combo that he replaced with an i5-7600 a few years ago and it has 2 PCIEx16 slots. Browsing local computer stores it seems that I can get a GTX 1650 SUPER or a GTX 1660 for about the same price due to the sales on the 1660s. Memory bandwidth is the same, and core configuration is relatively similar (1280 vs 1408), however the memory speed in the 1650 SUPER is 50% higher than memory speed in the 1660.

Considering that the only 16 series card that I have right now is the 1650 (non-super) I don't have a lot of experience with them. Just wondering if, in your observations, I would be better off with the higher memory speed, or the higher CUDA core count. Primary use would be GFN.

Thanks!

Wow good question. I really don't know, my gut says cores but my head says memory speed. Maybe throw it out on the forums and see what the response is like. Or on discord?

I also have a battle between my head and my gut, except mine goes something like this; my gut says it doesn't matter, and my head says that my gut is wrong, lol!

I have placed it on the forums and we shall see :)

Thanks!

All I get are empty squares when people post emojis (I probably have horribly outdated fonts on my general use PC), but if you are ever curious what one means, copying it and pasting it into Google search will bring up an emojipedia result that will tell you;

I got 2 GTX 1660s (EVGA SC edition) but I was also thinking that my i5-760 can almost certainly not feed them for GFN-13, so it will be quite the parts-mixing adventure for the next few hours. The i5-760 will end up with 2 GTX 1080s and a 1660 will go with each of my i7-2600K and Ryzen 5 1600X.

Vaughan has brought his entire fleet over to GFN-13. I wanna push that as far forward as I can while there are no DC issues ;)

不不不

What does that mean???????

All I get are empty squares when people post emojis (I probably have horribly outdated fonts on my general use PC), but if you are ever curious what one means, copying it and pasting it into Google search will bring up an emojipedia result that will tell you;

https://emojipedia.org/rolling-on-the-floor-laughing/

Enjoy!

Oh sorry, i assumed everyone can see emojis, Ill lay off them so ;)

Lol! No worries! It is an easy step to see which one you posted. It's my own problem for having decade old fonts and being too lazy to update them XD

Emoji to your heart's content :)

Well I'm done mucking about for the evening I think, unless something breaks. Everything is now running :)

And it was definitely wise to not put the 1660s with the i5-760; the CPU can't even feed the 2 1080s fully, although it is close enough that I'm not too worried, and it won't be a problem at all once GFN-13 is finished.

This has definitely reminded me of the immense efficiency improvement between Windows and Ubuntu for GFN though. The 1080s are now completing a task every 6 seconds each, compared to 10 seconds on Windows. Not sure why it happens, and I haven't tested it with anything larger than GFN-15, but it might be worth some experimentation for those of us who recently switched to GFN-21 after the GFN-21 challenge ;)

Ya, it's really a mixed bag between windows and linux. I went through a stage of running everything on linux. My world centers around the gpu's. And sadly linux is still rather wanting when it comes to gpu driver support compared to windows. But like you have mentioned there are benefits to linux, speed being one of them. :-)

I got a good taste of this when I tried to install a Radeon HD 5770 and 6870 in the computer a few days ago. I went through 3 or 4 iterations of fresh Ubuntu installations and everything I could possibly find on the internet about how to get them to work, but it just wouldn't happen and it wasn't clear why (not to me at least).

I have found that Nvidia GPUs on the other hand are relatively easy to install and get working correctly on Ubuntu. If you do want to install BOINC on an Ubuntu rig running Nvidia GPUs the commands that ended up working for me are this;

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-440
sudo apt install boinc-client boinc-manager
sudo apt install ocl-icd-libopencl1

I don't know if the first one is necessary, but I've seen it mentioned many times when doing anything with Ubuntu so I figured it wouldn't hurt to start off with that no matter what I'm doing, lol.

Ultimately for me I will be using Ubuntu a lot more in the future because the price of Windows 10 is just silly for a computer used only for crunching. The price of a retail version of Windows 10 Home Edition is the same as an i5-9400F here right now, so I can see a lot of Ubuntu in my future :)
