That's quite a RAC you are sporting Renix1943, certainly without doing PSA.

Has there been new kit purchased? :)

How nice of you to notice! haha Actually I've bee crunching a lot of pps-sieve since the last challenge. Just trying to get up to the big one billion point thing. As for kit... not yet. But I do have an electrician on the way to replace the house elec service panel and add 3 20amp lines in my garage so I can heat it up this winter with my high heat producing video cards. Haven't decided what to pick up for something new. I need to grab something that will crunch dyfl's faster than my 2070, or maybe just get a couple more of them. I did pick up another 1660ti a couple days ago.

The 2070 puts out some heat. And I keep 11 or 12 rigs running in my computer room all the time, but heat is a problem. I have been replacing 1060's and 970's with 1660ti's as they out perform the others and use a bit less power.

Yup, I really like the 1660ti's, but it takes them a couple days to crunch a dyfl. And that's why I decided to add some dedicated lines in the garage so I could pick up a real high end cruncher that I can't have in my computer room.

Of course I could always find another less expensive hobby... Ha!

Agreed, I cant believe how little heat comes from the 1660ti. My titans are like hairdryers, pumping out heat.

Edit: sometimes i have to check if the 1660ti's are on at all!

I do have an electrician on the way to replace the house elec service panel and add 3 20amp lines in my garage so I can heat it up this winter with my high heat producing video cards.

That's awesome!! Those 3 circuits you are installing are equivalent all of the power that comes to my unit, with 30 of those amps (at 110V) dedicated to my stove and fridge. I have two 15amp, 110V circuits for everything outside of my kitchen, and I've got them balanced with computers running at between 70 and 80% load on each, lol!

Interested in renting your garage out to a power-starved Canadian by any chance?

:P

It's good for the fall, winter, and spring. But the summer just gets too hot here. So roughly half the year is good in the garage.

Well my power costs here keep going up. I'm on the Columbia River by Richland, WA. For many years we had pretty cheap power but those days are fading into history. So far my wife hasn't thrown a big fit about my power bill. It keeps me off the streets and occupied! :-)

Of course the water in the river comes from those Canadian mountains... :-)

Same here; on November 1st the daytime rate went to $0.208/kWh here. During the summer I'll probably set everything to pause for peak rates. Keep the heat down along with the power bill that way :)

I was working out your way recently! On the Canadian side, but just. Quite the beautiful location!

I was working out your way recently! On the Canadian side, but just. Quite the beautiful location!

So where are you at?

I live just outside of Toronto in Ontario, but I was working in Coquitlam, BC (near Vancouver) recently and I have spent quite a lot of time working in and around Elko, NV in the past. Neither one in your backyard, but still not too far away :)

I am a geologist, but I also participate in structural assessments, as the non-destructive evaluation of concrete/metal structures uses all the same technologies as geophysics equipment. If there is a problem with a structure we can generally perform a non-invasive preliminary assessment and figure out what the problem is and delineate the probable boundaries of it. This is mostly done through the use of ground penetrating radar and ultrasonic shear-wave tomography.

I've been trying to cut back on the travel as much as possible for the past few years and pass this work down to some of the younger staff, but for the more complex jobs I still get sent to site now and again which is why I was out in BC and NV.

My day-to-day job is the determination of the physical and mechanical properties of rock for mine engineering use (compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, etc.). That is way more fun :)

How about yourself, before you retired?

I was an aviation electronics tech in the navy. Been with computers since the early 60's. Then more computers after I retired from the navy working for some govt contractors.

That sounds pretty cool! Getting to work with computers during a time when computers cost more (and probably weighed more) than most cars would have been quite amazing.

If you have any interest in retro computing, but without the vintage components, you may be interested in this; https://monotech.fwscart.com/NuXT_MicroATX_Turbo_XT_955MHz_832K_RAM_XTCF_SVGA_Floppy_Serial/p6083514_19777986.aspx

It is from the same era as my first home computer (an Apple IIe), and has been on my wish list since I saw it (and I will probably pick it up this Christmas). Would be a lot of fun to get all of my old DOS games running on something with relatively modern hardware support and without worrying about blowing some 35-year-old capacitors :)

yep, there were some really fun times on some of the old iron for sure, and some of them were pretty exotic for the time being special purpose systems. Had a C-64 that had some games that I really loved. The XT in your url reminded me of a Kaypro XT I had. Things have really changed since then. :-)

Just ordered a couple cpu and memory for a couple spare motherboards I have sitting on a shelf. They will end up in the garage to feed a couple high output video cards once the electricians get the new lines in.

To the best of my knowledge it isn't possible to multi-thread AP27, so I have never tried. If you do try and get it to work, let us know!

Very nice!! Spare motherboards! That is something that I have never had, lol. It is always the CPU that outlives the board for me :)

Well I guess not. Doesn't seem to want to send any MT work units to the system.

Just ordered a couple cpu and memory for a couple spare motherboards I have sitting on a shelf. They will end up in the garage to feed a couple high output video cards once the electricians get the new lines in.

Nice! that's the next few weekends sorted for you, putting it all together. I still like the anticipation of "will it work" on the first power on :)

Lets just say there is always the big question in your head as you flip on the switch.... Do I like worrying about it? No. Primarily I guess because it means having to go through the hassle of returns.... :-)

This is definitely the same way I feel about it. Each time I turn something new on I just keep hoping that the magic smoke stays inside all of the components. If it comes out the hassle is huge XD

It's just amazing how you can think how you have everything planned out..... and then mother nature jumps right in there to start introducing some shoe stoppers into the mix. I'd ordered some ddr4 3000 sticks, and what arrived was ddr3-1600 which no workie. So there goes the return items game. As things worked out, the local shop just got in a load of ddr4-3000 so I picked up 32gb of that. Of course then the small print monster has to have it's turn as I can't run win7 on the new cpu's/motherboard, so gonna have to get win10. So I obviously didn't think this through as well as I initially figured. All this effort for some life support systems for high end video cards. So here I was hoping to get some more firepower on line for the challenge I'm not going to have the new assets to start it off with. But oh well, into each life a little rain must fall. :-)

Sorry to hear about the troubles Renix1943! Glad you have a relatively quick solution though :)

If you are ever looking for some inexpensive life support systems for GPUs and don't care too much about using the CPU for anything other than feeding the GPU, then a refurbished Dell desktop can be a reasonable choice. Many of the Mini-Tower and T series desktops/workstations can support a relatively long video card (maybe not a EVGA FTW model, but still reasonably long; the system specs for each model will tell you) and take a standard ATX power supply, so you can beef up what it comes with to something more reasonable (as they generally come with a 280 or 300W supply for the optiplex series). You can grab these from Dell Refurbished directly for ~$150 during sales and the CPU most frequently available recently has been the i5-3470, but it is trending towards the i5-4590. Several of my machines are these ;)

Some of the T series also have 4 PCIE x16 slots, two of which are 75W rated and the other two are x8 wired, and 25 or 50W rated, but could support the use of risers with video cards powered from the power supply only. My main GFN-13 rig is a T5500 with a GTX1050 and 2 GT1030s powered from the PCIE slots alone, and it does about 26,000 GFN-13 tasks per day. I got it for $99 on one of their clearance sales and it has been well worth the spend!

Ultimately, I hope that everything comes in soon and you can get those rigs up and running without too much more trouble!

Also, from your last sentence "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall" is one of my favorite songs. Love the Ink Spots and Ella Fitzgerald together. They were perfect.

ah..... I finally crossed into the billion plus point crunching world here. And my RAC has continued upward where I'm closing in on that Polish guy above me. So I'll enjoy it now cause shortly it will begin to drop as I move off the heavy pps sieving work units.

What I'm concerned about now is the ap27 effort ending before I can get my dirty nappy for ap27. So after I get the new power lines and the coming challenge out of the way I'll get into a heavy run on ap27.

Congratulations on joining the 10 9 club!! Your RAC is definitely quite impressive! With your setups you could have probably gotten into 1st place for RAC with manual sieving credit, before they fixed it recently.

The "dirty nappy" badge. Lol! Never really thought of it like that but now that you mention it I can see what you mean XD

Even if they give the 30-day notice I'm sure you could make it before AP27 ended, especially once your new rigs are online ;)

I have not had much luck getting a mega-prime yet. But all things in due time so the saying goes. lol

Yup, the day after tomorrow is the big day for the electrician's to arrive and do the electrical system upgrades. Pretty excited about it so I can finally get one of those hair dryer super duper gpu's. Still haven't bought that yet but when I do it's gonna live on the gfn higher end. :-)

With your new kit added it wont be too long till you double that and hopefully many, many primes and APs in the mix :)

Not trying to pry but the 1660ti is a really good midrange card (found my Ap27) and about 200 $ i think. Maybe five of those in one rig might be better option than the single more expensive (1000$ ) card? Although if its a matter of high gfns you want to search the 2080ti is fast. Gfn 21 on 1660ti is just over 12 hours. More like 4.5 hours on 2080ti i think. I'd rather do 5 in 12 hours rather than 2.5 mind you. :)

I currently have 5 1660ti's. Good cards, really love them. However, it takes 2 days for a 1660 to crunch dyfl. Would like something to crunch them faster. :-) As for the gfn-21's, the 1660 is fine. :-)

Oh Doh! Suppose I could have checked first 🤣🤣🤣

So opting for the big guns then 👍 I might swing one 2080 but cant justify buying anything else for a long time. Plenty to keep me going even if a lot of my cards are getting on a bit. Expensive hobby this 🙂

Yep, it sure is an expensive hobby for sure. I always keep going back to computers though. It keeps the brain busy. :-) I'll be in financial straits too after the wiring. One has to dream though. I will probably just pick up another 2070 and that will be it for a while until I get enough saved up. I still have 3 970's just sitting. They put out a lot of heat and suck a lot of juice. But I could put them out in the garage. But I'd really rather not as the 1660's run circles around them. The 1660's are good in my computer room because of the comparatively low heat and higher output.

It's all rather sick in a way, as never satisfied with what you have. lol And always need more points, or more primes, or.......... lol

Yes. Never satisfied is right. Although theres a element of the grass is always greener.... if I remember correctly, I found my 19 on a gtx 690 (ancient at the time) Two 17megas on amd 7800s (also bordering on dont bother territory), ap27 on 1660ti etc etc. So power/speed does not always matter. Concentration of all your kit on one subproject is key imho. 20 lottery tickets in one draw. Vs 20 single tickets in 20 separate draws. Spread too thin and get nothing. Concentrate and 🤗 ......well works for me anyhoo 🙂👍

Picked up an evga rtx 2060 super. Pretty snappy little card, does a pps sieve in 2min 48sec. More heat than a 1660ti of course but it's not terrible.

Nice. Going to get one final card, 2080 and thats it for me for a long time. I have 4 PCs that 'died' last year but I suspect they just require thermal paste replaced, so going to try fix those over next few weeks. Anyone recommend a particular brand of paste as good?

I use arctic silver. But I think probably any of the big names ones would work. I stick with arctic silver because I run my stuff 24x7 and thus the crunchers have a rough life.

Nice. Going to get one final card, 2080 and thats it for me for a long time.

I was really debating about a 2080ti or super. Then I read about a high number of failures with the 2080 ti/supers, So I was going to go after another 2070 instead. Then read some reports on the 2060's. Some stuff they are pretty wicked on. Like the sieving, it has stabilized on 2min 49sec per unit and still isn't a bake-oven next to the 2070. And it's faster on the sieve than the 2070. Not so hot on the larger gfn's. And price isn't too much more than the 1660's.

The 2080 super's are pretty ferocious cards, and they have a ferocious price too, though not as bad as a couple of the high end quadro's. lol

I'm always scared to throw all my cash into one card, just in case I do get that 1/1000 dud. You can always RMA a failed card, but there are shipping costs and the time you're without a card. I'd generally rather stick with 2 cheaper cards that add up to the 1 more powerful card. With that said, the only card you mentioned that I wouldn't buy (from a price to performance ratio standpoint) is a 2080 ti. The 2080 Super is so close and much, much cheaper. At least in Canada anyway.

Whatever you end up getting; enjoy!

Well I ended up getting a couple rtx2060 supers. They rock along pretty good without busting the bank. They are really close to the rtx2070 on most things but cost less. Noticeably more heat than the 1660ti's though. So I put one along with a 2070 out in the garage where it is cold now. Been snowing this week, so no problem with the heat out in the garage now. Haha! :-)
