The thread about the Mercury crossing has taken an interesting turn, like what are we really accomplising here in the direction of mathematical advancements. Are we all really OCD cruncher freaks? haha. But for me it sorta adds some meat to are we actually accomplishing to further anything, or just pursuing primes, or just chasing colored badges? Are the primes we find here useful for anything really? Or are we just making nvidia, amd, intel/apple more profitable for the owners/stockholders???

Yes, I saw that discussion, but I have no clear opinion about the real value to mathematics. There are a few mathematicians working on the algorithms and looking at the results compared to conjectures and hypothesis. So I guess it is somehow useful.

In terms of value I assumed it helped encryption. From recent discussions it seems not to be the case.

The way I see it, the prime you find, however big or small, forever has YOUR name associated with it. It's kind of virtual graffiti. Your little mark left behind when you're gone. Not huge fame but a mark to say " yes, I was here" 😉 Maybe in a 100 years someone might read your name and think, "I wonder who they were and why it took so long to do this stuff and probably why did they bother when a 500million digit prime can be found every day at that stage.

Answer, because it's a hobby and the unknown is fun. Never knowing if or when the next prime will fall 😉

This for me. Even if searching for these primes is mathematically useless, we do all sorts of useless things for fun every day. This is just another hobby on my list; none of which seem to accomplish anything of real value, but they're all a lot of fun :)

Same! But even more than the money spent on computer parts has been the money spent on the power to run them, lol.

Totally worth it though :)

oh ya, for sure on the power. Buy I get tons of enjoyment out of various crunching projects. And it's a hobby I have never got tired of. It keeps the mind busy. Always something new to learn.

Somewhat related to this thread (related enough that I can justify to myself not starting a new one ;) ) is that Roger seems to have stepped down as challenge coordinator.

Since you guys somehow manage to get the inside scoop on things, I was just curious if you know why Roger stepped down as Challenge Coordinator. I was considering putting myself forward for the position as, on the surface, it seems like it would be quite fun. However if there is some hidden issue with the position I'd hate to commit myself to doing it, then find out that it was terrible.

What are your thoughts on the position?

Somewhat related to this thread (related enough that I can justify to myself not starting a new one ;) ) is that Roger seems to have stepped down as challenge coordinator.

Since you guys somehow manage to get the inside scoop on things, I was just curious if you know why Roger stepped down as Challenge Coordinator. I was considering putting myself forward for the position as, on the surface, it seems like it would be quite fun. However if there is some hidden issue with the position I'd hate to commit myself to doing it, then find out that it was terrible.

What are your thoughts on the position?

I was thinking of it too. I think (like all the admins) you have to respond to a few, lets say "oddballs" and related rants. I think over time it can wear you out. Obviously you cant just say "F Off" even if what theyre saying is crazy 🤣

Having said that I decided not to put myself forward based on time availablility. I'd say it would be a bit of fun. Go for it. Not sure but you may gain access to the prime queue as an admin, and have the inside track 👍

Thanks Rob! I will continue to ponder this for a bit (even if that means someone else gets it; I like to make a firm decision before committing into something new and that process can take a bit of time sometimes), but I think your assessment is likely correct.

I'm pretty used to those "oddballs" in my day-to-day workings. I supervise a laboratory and we hire a number of interns and students every year. Most of them are great, but there are those who really like to complain about everything and don't really stop to think whether their complaints are valid before voicing them, so I'm relatively immune to that potential downside :)

As an exercise I was thinking of possible themes and looking through the calendar and remembered something rather amusing that you may be familiar with. Remember the show Father Ted? According to Dougal July 19th is the day the ice age ended. I'd love to have a "Day the Ice Age Ended" challenge to see who gets the reference ;)

Ha! you a fan of Father Ted? Me too!! I know its a PI55-take obviously, but some of it is actually soo accurate in ways you wouldn't believe :)

I know a couple like the couple in the shop who are always trying to kill each other for example :) and I'm pretty sure there are still "I shot JR" Tee-shirts still being sported in certain rural areas :)

LOL! It most certainly is and that's probably why I love it so much! That couple was amazing, along with pretty much every character in the series. Few shows have managed to be so ridiculous but serious enough about it to make it funny still.

When Ted dented that raffle car and tried to hammer it out I think I was about 2 seconds away from requiring hospitalization from laughing so hard. Definitely one of the top 3 laughs of my life!

Last time my mom was in Ireland she went to the house where it was filmed. You have to book in advance, but they serve brunch there now. I am just guessing, but I assume that they had so many people just show up to see the place they gave in and opened it up for fans :)

Already got a response, and I am beginning to think that Michael is some advanced A.I. because he seems to be able to respond at any time! He responded right away and let me know that someone else has been selected, which is totally fine, as long as someone does it I'll be happy!. The challenges are pretty fun, so I'd hate to see them go away.

I did send him my partial list of ideas to forward on to the new coordinator though (minus the Day the Ice Age Ended idea for July 19th :P). Even if a single one of these is selected I'll be pretty pumped!

January 18, 1944 - Colossus computer (first electronic digital programmable computer) arrives in Bletchley Park. It was for code-breaking.
March 23, 1769 - William Smith's B-Day (Provided proof for the Law of Superposition which is the basis of modern geology and generated the most detailed geological map to date, of England, Wales and part of Scotland.
June 25, 2005 - PrimeGrid's 15th Birthday. It was on this date Rytis made his first post welcoming people to the project.
September 1-2, 1859 - Carrington Event. An enormous coronal mass ejection hit the earth, powerful enough to shock telegraph operators and induce current flow in rail lines. If something similar hit the Earth today, it would cost tens of trillions of dollars to repair the damage and years to recover.
October 1582 - Transition from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. The Julian calendar had progressive errors in it, caused by improper leap year application, which resulted in the equinoxes being off by 10 days as of 1582. The calendar was advanced from October 4, 1582 directly to October 15, 1582, which would make for an excellent 10-day challenge.[/u]

Really good ideas Kellen. Especially the last one! 👍

Thanks all! I'll be more prepared next time. I was kinda surprised to see Roger step down and hadn't even given consideration to the position before. Ultimately I'm happy as long as the challenges continue. I also hope that Roger is OK!
