My computer with a 7600k in it completed this task using all four threads in 44000 seconds: https://www.primegrid.com/result.php?resultid=1032922944

My computer with a 9700k in it completed this task using four threads (running another task on the other for threads) in 82000 seconds: https://www.primegrid.com/result.php?resultid=1032483711

I would have expected the 9700k to be able to complete the task slightly faster than the 7600k, but that clearly did not happen here. Both are running at factory settings, I don't have either overclocked. The only major difference between the two computers is the fact that the 7600k has a GPU in it that is running AP27, while the 9700k does not have a graphics card (yet).

Any ideas on why the 7600k is able to complete tasks so much faster than the 9700k? I doubt this much of a difference could be explained by differences in RAM timings...

It looks like it is a bit faster. 2 tasks on the 7600k would take 88000 seconds, which would be 6000 slower than the 9700k

The 7600k is substantially faster, which it should not be.

And now the 9700k completed a task in 42000 seconds, so it seems like the durations are just a little spread out, which I didn’t expect given how deep into the Cullen search we are.

Were the FFT sizes in the tasks different?

Here is the information on the four tasks I have completed so far.
CPU FFT Duration 9700k 1920K 80570 7600k 1920K 44308 9700k 1920K 82480 9700k 1280K 42103

So the 7600k is substantially faster on the larger FFT size. The 7600k is also processing a task with 1920K as the FFT size and is also on track for a 44000ish second duration.

You're probably ram bandwidth limited on the 8 core. Try running a single task with 8 cores.

It looks like it is a bit faster. 2 tasks on the 7600k would take 88000 seconds, which would be 6000 slower than the 9700k

7600k: 44000 seconds with 4 cores
9700k: 82000 seconds with 4 cores

The 7600k is substantially faster, which it should not be.

Due to memory bandwidth problems with using all eight cores it won't run two tasks at 44000 seconds each. What is the time it takes to run one on the 9700k with just 4 cores and the other 4 cores unused? It will probably be close to 44000 but faster depending on the ghz difference between the two and depending on the ram speed and timing.

What I was talking about is it would take 88000 seconds to run 2 tasks on the 7600k. It is only taking 82000 seconds to run 2 on the 9700k. That is faster.

I own a 9700k and it is disappointing for tasks here unless it fits into the cache memory. Also some tasks are faster than others. I can run a 321 on 8 cores in around 6500 seconds. That is excellent. if i run 2 at 4 cores each it jumps to 18000 per task. That is quite a difference. Also running many larger tasks is not great either.

I'm trying to switch it to running a single task on all eight cores. I am hoping that will drop the time down to 22000ish seconds. Fingers crossed.

My computer with a 9700k in it completed this task using four threads (running another task on the other for threads) in 82000 seconds: https://www.primegrid.com/result.php?resultid=1032483711

Perhaps the two tasks together are larger than your L3 cache, which is shared? To compare apples to apples, run just a single 4-thread task, of the same type. I suspect it will be a bit faster than the 7600k task, as you were hoping for. If this is the case, then just run a single task using up to 8 cores, rather than 2 tasks using 4 each.

Another thought: Is the hyper-thread setting (on/off) the same for both? It needs to be the same, to compare apples to apples.

A task running on all 8 cores resulted in a duration of 29000 seconds on the 9700k. Not as good as I had hoped for, but better than the results I was getting, so this is a positive end.

The tasks are 30MB, so one task does not fit in L3 cache at all.
