I have some examples of PrimeGrid tasks where the estimated Remaining Time shows 52d and 56d, and yet the deadline for reporting these is 27th Oct. This is only 19 days away as I write this.

I have 7 PrimeGrid tasks listed in total with no other BOINC project tasks shown.

Why would PrimeGrid set such impossible deadlines, and absorb computing power from other tasks, on these two examples I've mentioned?

BOINC is really bad at estimating completion times before you actually start running the task. I can't see if your tasks are set up properly, but assuming they are, none of them should take longer than a week to complete.

Regardless of that, Primegrid has a feature to automatically extend the deadline. So long as your computer is working on a taks and has internet connection, it will send trickles to the server every once in a while and it will automatically push the deadline forward up to a maximum of 4 times the original limit. Unfortunately, due to BOINC limitations, your computer can't actually see that increase, but know that it is there in case you need it.

Also, from looking at your task list, I think you are referring to a couple of GFN-21 workunits, running on your CPU! The recent average time for such tasks is around 300 hours when I just checked.

Frankly, I would stick to running GFN-21 on GPU only. But as mentioned above, you will get the deadline extended if you're still working on them when the current one expires.

Many thanks to Rafael and Darryl for very prompt and reassuring responses.

I'll happily admit to being no expert in setting up or configuring how various tasks should run for optimum behaviour. I may have ticked too many, or not enough, boxes at various stages and not fully understood the consequences. Leave it with me - I'll go and do some investigation and try to educate myself.

Thanks again.

PrimeGrid does it differently than alot of other Projects, they check your workunit as you are running it...meaning as long as your result is still needed and you are crunching it they will just keep extending the deadline for you. So if those workunits are being crunched you should be okay as long as you finish them. You can always abort them and run workunits with shorter deadlines, but you don't have to is what I'm saying.
