Morning All!

Sometime while sleeping last night I developed a perfect "orders of magnitude" for primes found in the Proth Prime Search (1 prime), Sophie Germain Prime Search (10 primes) and Generalized Fermat Prime Search (100 primes). It won't last long (hopefully), so I snapped a quick screenshot and figured I'd share :D

Thanks Rob! I also love stuff like this and got rather excited when I saw it this morning, followed by some lamentation that it would never happen again, followed by the realization that it will only never happen again in base 10.

Now I just need to get 21 more GFN-15 primes and 1 more SGS prime and I'll have my base 11 orders of magnitude ;)

Indeed well spotted ;)

That should take you....about 21 days :)

I think Mike has made the gfn prime dicoveries a sticky thread! Your name on it every day, so all he has to do is change the number! Haha ;)

Ha! I'm marking that on the calendar and we will see just how close this prediction is!

GFN-15 participation has been up recently, so I was able to throw most of my hardware at it, but it is trending downwards now, so I'll probably pull my 2070 off of it. (Can't do more than half the work on a sub-project for very long before you hit that pending tasks limit and just stop getting new work, plus; I like to stay a bit less than half so that I don't get out ahead of everyone. Its a bit unfair to leave only DC tasks, lol). With the 2070 onto other things, I should still be at around 8-9k tasks per day, so 21 days for 21 primes is definitely doable if a lucky breeze blows my way :D

That's interesting actually I didn't realise that but it makes sense now. You cant do more than half. I often wondered why the likes of TNG and Ryan Propper seem to 'scatter target' instead of concentrating on one subproject. They're forced to! Otherwise no work. Im doing a quater of 21's right now so theres no point in more than doubling my gpu power. Ill be approaching the limit. Im a concentrator.

Actually! You could triple it before it would become a problem.

Percentages are a bit misleading for this calculation so we can go with some numerical values. If you are doing 25% of the work and there are 100 tasks completed each day then you are doing 25 tasks, and others are doing 75 tasks. You could do 75 tasks too ;)

Looking at my power bill and then looking at your computers I think tripling what you have might be a costly endeavor...but then again...if you quadruple your computing power and get out ahead of everyone you're guaranteed to be initial finder when you grab that first GFN-21!

I often wondered why the likes of TNG and Ryan Propper seem to 'scatter target' instead of concentrating on one subproject. They're forced to! Otherwise no work.

I also never really though of this as a problem until I spent a day or two trying to troubleshoot why I was only getting tasks intermittently, and then also noticed that I was first on every task. After that I started checking the Task Status page every day to make sure I stay under half :)

Im a concentrator.

Me too usually. Concentrating on one project reduces the total amount of time you are waiting for the pending credit to go away so that the next badge will pop up, lol.

DOH!

I'll put that down to being half asleep in bed when I wrote that, I'm not that bad at Math under normal circumstances :D
In my defence I did say 'approaching' ;)

Lol! No worries; I am very familiar with bed math. Morning math too now that I think about it...

Just wanted to make sure that you didn't feel limited to *only* doubling your hardware, ;)

Looks like I'm right on track for 21 primes in 21 days BTW. Gonna keep a close eye on it!

Ill be getting some new kit over the summer so watch this space or rather my rac (hmmm that just sounds wrong :) )

21 in 21, challenge accepted so. Hopefully ill do the same only gfn 21 in 21 days :D

That should take you....about 21 days :)

I don't think you can even reach 1/2 of the tasks. When I had lots of CPUs during TdP 2018, I tried to run PPSE only but had to add PPS and MEGA to keep them busy. I think the server begins to throttle a single user at about 1/3 ot the total tasks sent.

Interesting! Maybe it is related to the total number of pending tasks, or differs by sub-project? I ran at about 45% of all tasks for GFN-15 yesterday and the day before, and am sitting at 40% right now without issue, so it may be related to something other than the fraction an individual is doing. It would be interesting to see exactly what the server looks for when deciding that someone has had enough work for one sub-project.

And, lol!! That gave me a very hearty chuckle. I should say though that dthonon's problem with the PPSE is much, much more impressive than mine with GFN-15. Saturating PPSE during TdP is an enormous feat. I just took a look at your computers Dad and you could run into the same issue with GFN-15 from time to time if I stopped crunching it. I'd guess that, if everything was configured correctly, you could get between 5,200 and 5,800 GFN-15 tasks crunched per day. Several times in the past year, that would have put you close to or over 50%. At one point while we were working hard to find GFN-13 pairs on stream's server, the total GFN-15s per day was down to 5,560. :)

I had a quick look at boinc server code. Unless I missed something, the limitation is that a user is not permitted to receive another task from the same WU. So, in theory, a very fast and powerfull user could go up to 50% of all tasks of a sub-project. But timing is also a limitation.
In order to get a task, a CPU/GPU first needs to request one, usually near the end of the previous one. For small tasks like GFN-15 on fast GPU, you are probably requesting tasks every few seconds, leaving little time for other GPU to fit between your requests.
For PPSE tasks, that take longer, the update period is in tens og minutes, leaving more time for other users.

Those servers will reach end of "production" life somewhere between 3 and 5 years and need to be replaced. So the new ones will need to be benchmarked too no? 😉😎

This makes a lot of sense! I complete a GFN-15 task on average every 9-10 seconds right now, so the server is constantly receiving requests for new tasks.

I think that if you started the challenge doing more than 50% of PPSE tasks you would probably be able to maintain that 50%, but if you ever fell below 50% it would be very difficult (or impossible) to recover. Getting to 50% would be the hard part. Maintaining it is probably doable because then your computers would constantly be requesting work until they got a new task.

Thanks for looking into this! I wouldn't have had the slightest idea how to do so :)

For small tasks like GFN-15 on fast GPU, you are probably requesting tasks every few seconds, leaving little time for other GPU to fit between your requests.
For PPSE tasks, that take longer, the update period is in tens og minutes, leaving more time for other users.

With PG policy of double-checking every BOINC result, there are at least 2 tasks created for each work-unit (2 and then more if a task returns with an error, or never returns, or checking fails). And a single user cannot get more than 1 task per WU. So you can never get more that 50% of the tasks. But that still means that you get nearly 100% of the WU, either as 1st or 2nd.
