Thought I might go for some of the more "exotic" badges after getting my M. From what I can tell this is the "best way" for these badges?

F - Proth Prime Search
K - Sierpinski/Riesel Base 5 Prime Search
SG/TP - Sophie Germain Prime Search

And for numbered badges that would be:

AP - AP27 Search
#'s - Generalized Cullen/Woodall Prime Search

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks!

Any prime on Sierpinski/Riesel Base 5 Prime Search will give you K badge
negative side: those candidates are big, so you can do small number of it: but since we never know where prime is...

SG/TP - Sophie Germain Prime Search - small and fast, but extremely rare

That's correct. PPSE might be better than PPS for the F badge. Maybe. Maybe not. My understanding is that Fermat divisors are more likely with lower Ks, which would make PPS better, but you can run tasks much faster and primes themselves are more likely with PPSE. Overall, I'm not sure which is better.

All the others I agree with. In some cases, those are the only projects where you can earn that badge.

You could also run GFN-21 and try to get the 21 badge for finding the first known GFN-21 prime.

On the PPS vs PPSE thing...

There's currently 19 Fermat divisors in the database.

Of those 19, 6 are PPSE, so there's about twice as many PPS F badges as PPSE F badges. PPS currently takes about three times as long to run as PPSE. I'm not sure which is a better bet.

And... good luck. I've been trying to personally eliminate a k since long before I made those badges. That includes running ESP back when the numbers were tiny and it was running on PRPNet. None yet, but I'm always hopeful that the next the task I'm running now is the one.

I'm running SR5. It's the best chance for eliminating a K. Of all of those special badges, that's probably the most likely.

And go rub Robbish's foot. He's our lucky rabbit. Luck helps. It only takes one task to get any of those badges.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned 321 yet. 321 primes are of course much rarer, but they're far more likely to be Fermat divisors if you can find one. The heuristic is that a prime of the form k*2^n + 1 (with k odd) has about a 1/k chance of being a Fermat divisor. So a 321 prime has a 1/6 chance: namely, a 1/3 chance if it's 3^2^n + 1, and no chance if it's 3*2^n - 1. It's actually pretty unlucky that none of our nine 321 primes to date have been Fermat divisors.

I did a back-of-the-envelope calculation, using (# primes)/(# complete tasks) from the subproject status pages as a proxy for the probability of finding a prime in each project. (Presumably this probability tends to go down over time as we check larger numbers; I guess it would also depend on sieving limits. I'm also making some other dubious assumptions, e.g. that PPS tasks are equally distributed between k's.) It looks like a given 321 task has a better chance of producing a Fermat divisor than a given task in the PPS subprojects, but not quite a good enough chance to make up for how long 321 tasks take. (But on the other hand, maybe the prospect of more than quadrupling the Fermat divisor world record will give people some motivation to go the 321 route!)

PPS:
1/10.3K chance of finding a prime
* 1/650 chance that it is a Fermat divisor (average of 1/301, ..., 1/1199, since the k < 301 aren't currently active)
~ 1/6.7M chance overall

PPSE:
1/8.7K chance of finding a prime
* 1/4150 chance that it is a Fermat divisor (average of 1/1201, ..., 1/9999)
~ 1/36.2M chance overall

PPS MEGA:
1/36K chance of finding a prime
* 1/253 chance that it is a Fermat divisor (average of 1/11, ..., 1/1199)
~ 1/9.15M overall

321:
1/124K chance of finding a prime
* 1/6 chance that it is a Fermat divisor
~ 1/741K overall

According to the "recent average CPU time" as stated on the Preferences page, this means that these four projects will, on average, find one Fermat divisor every 8.2M, 15.9M, 18.1M, or 32.7M hours respectively. May the odds be ever in your favor :)

All of your assumptions seem reasonable, and the differences in sieving probably won't change the numbers much because at the end of the sieve you're not finding a lot of factors.

With PPS at 8.2 Million CPU hours per Fermat divisor being the best option, on a quad core CPU running four tasks you're looking at 2.05 million hours per Fermat divisor.

There's 8765.76 hours in an average year (365.24 days per year), so that would be 233.86 years with a single computer.

Putting a different spin on that, if we have 233 "average" quad core computers running PPS, we should find a Fermat divisor every year.

So, there I was about to scold you for both trying to "poach" people away from their team (that's frowned upon) AND for being off topic, since there's a dedicated thread called team recruitment thread.

Only I couldn't find that thread.

Seems nobody had posted anything there in over a year, so not only was it on the second page of the "General" forum, but it also got automatically locked. Oops.

I've unlocked that thread and also stickied it so it won't get lost again. Team recruitment posts should go there, unless, of course, someone starts asking for advice about teams -- you're allowed to respond to them.

And don't poach. You wouldn't like it if I started recruiting Storm members for AtP, would you?

Point taken - tho' it was meant as 'tongue in cheek' hence the 'winky'

I doubt many would come to STORM just for Robish's blessing - no offence to the GREAT ROBISH!!!

And...

Says the guy with the GFN19 badge after *how* many workunits? :)

And...

What is the difference between GCW and WOO (both are Woodall Prime searches ) as far as the "#" badges go? Seems like WOO takes way longer. ..?

Woodall can only earn an "M" badge. GCW can earn the "#" and "M" badges.

The "#" badges are awarded for finding the first prime in any GCW base. GCW searches for Generalized Cullen and Woodall primes, meaning in a base > 2. Woodall only searches base 2, and there's plenty of known "not-generalized" base 2 Woodall primes.

So a 321 prime has a 1/6 chance: namely, a 1/3 chance if it's 3*2^n + 1, and no chance if it's 3*2^n - 1. It's actually pretty unlucky that none of our nine 321 primes to date have been Fermat divisors.

I realized a while after writing this that it's not quite right: I was assuming that the sequences 3*2^n+1 and 3*2^n-1 have the same weight. I don't have the numbers handy, but given that we know more "minus" primes than "plus" ones, I'm guessing that 3*2^n-1 has a higher weight. (Partial explanation for this: 3*2^n-1 is never divisible by 7, and 3*2^n+1 often is--namely, whenever n is 1 mod 3.)

If this is correct, it would be reflected in sieving. So a slight majority of 321 LLR tasks are for 3*2^n-1 numbers, which makes the chance of finding a Fermat divisor a bit worse.

You have the theorem: if 3.2n+1 divides a Fermat number then n is odd.

3.210829346+1, 3.25082306+1 and 3.22291610+1 can't divide a Fermat number.

Today, 9 '321' primes were found but a single one was a candidate: 3.27033641+1.
