Message 128223 - Posted: 22 Mar 2019 | 5:15:23 UTC

I have recently started back up into the shared processing area and now have a video card that cad do processing work (not the best but something). I am trying to just use the GPU since the processor is being used by other tasks and the GPU sits and does nothing, and really do not want to manually sieve.

I have my profile set to Use NVIDIA GPU = YES, and I have several projects selected:
Proth Prime Search Sieve (PPS-Sieve) Nvidia GPU (CUDA)
Generalized Fermat Prime Search n=15 (GFN-15) Nvidia GPU (OpenCL)
Generalized Fermat Prime Search n=16 (GFN-16) Nvidia GPU (OpenCL)
Generalized Fermat Prime Search n=17 Low (GFN-17-Low) Nvidia GPU (OpenCL)
Generalized Fermat Prime Search n=17 Mega (GFN-17-Mega) Nvidia GPU (OpenCL)

When I try to get new tasks I get the message from BOINC: 3/22/2019 1:01:54 AM | PrimeGrid | Your current settings do not allow tasks from this project. To fix this, you can change Project Preferences on the project's web site.

I have a NVIDIA K5000 driver 419.17.
I looked fir a file called CC_CONFIG.XML but found nothing.
I checked the account_www.primegrid.com.xml file and found what looked right: <no_cuda>0</no_cuda>

I am not sure what else to look at, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

First thing I would check is that the location assigned to that computer (Your Account - Computers on this account - Details) is the same location as the preferences you're updating.

I originally had it set under the default profile, I then set up the "Sun" profile (because why not) to match those settings. I then placed my computer in the "Sun" group and manually updated again and received the same error.

I am not sure of the cause for certain, but BOINC does not see the GPU (i.e., it should see the K5000 in your listing for the machine on the PG website in the list of your computers). That may be because vbox is preventing it from loading the GPU properly. It is also a typical symptom when the driver is not loaded properly (especially if it is loaded by default by Win10 rather than directly installing the driver from NVidia).

Also, make sure that you did not install BOINC as a service. GPU applications will not work in Windows after Win XP if installed as a service.

Finally, make sure that you checked the appropriate "use GPU" button at the top of the project preferences page.

The BOINC client running on your computer is not recognizing your GPU. As far as BOINC is concerned, your computer has no GPU. If you look at your list of computers https://www.primegrid.com/hosts_user.php you'll see that under "GPU" all it lists is "vbox". Your GPU isn't shown.

Bad drivers, Windows Remote Desktop, installing BOINC as a service, and an almost unlimited number of other causes can prevent BOINC from seeing the GPU.

If I had to guess, I'd say the most likely cause is that you installed BOINC as a service. If that's the problem, you'll need to uninstall BOINC and then reinstall BOINC again, but without choosing the option to install it as a service. This means BOINC won't run until you log on, but this is required to use a GPU.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I did not know that the installing BOINC as a service would keep it from using the GPU, if it told me I missed it. But that install option sounds right I set my projects to no new tasks and will reinstall once they are finished running, I keep 0 days work so it should only be a few hours and then I will update the thread accordingly.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think you can just reinstall BOINC (without the "as a service" option). You may not need to uninstall. Note, however, that if you install over an existing copy of BOINC, it should default to your previous installation options. You'll need to explicitly choose one of the other options instead of "as a service".

I can verify that Mike is correct here. I have reinstalled a non-service BOINC over a previous service install many times. No need to uninstall first.

Yeah that does make sense even doing a full reinstall it knew where my "old" data directory was kept all my projects and such... looks like I was a little to overly cautious.

The good news is that I am now able to get GPU tasks.

3/22/2019 3:42:46 PM | PrimeGrid | Scheduler request completed: got 1 new tasks
