Welcome to the Oktoberfest Challenge!

The sixth Challenge of the 2018 Challenge series is a 7 day challenge to celebrate Oktoberfest. The challenge is being offered on the Cullen Prime Search (LLR) application.

Oktoberfest is the world's largest Volksfest (beer festival and travelling funfair). Held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, it is a 16 to 18-day folk festival running from mid or late September to the first weekend in October, with more than six million people from around the world attending the event every year. Locally, it is often called the Wiesn, after the colloquial name for the fairgrounds, Theresa's meadows (Theresienwiese). The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since the year 1810. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations that are modelled on the original Munich event.

During the event, large quantities of Oktoberfest Beer are consumed: during the 16-day festival in 2013, for example, 7.7 million litres (66,000 US bbl) were served. Visitors also enjoy numerous attractions, such as amusement rides, sidestalls, and games. There is also a wide variety of traditional foods available.

This year Oktoberfest will start on Saturday, September 22nd. The Schottenhamel tent will be the place to be if you want to catch the official opening ceremonies. At noon, the Mayor of Munich will have the honor of tapping the first keg of Oktoberfest beer. Once the barrel has been tapped, all visitors will then be allowed to quench their thirst. The festival will go until October 7th.

To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Cullen Prime Search LLR (CUL) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 15th September 2018 18:00 UTC and end 22nd September 2018 18:00 UTC.

Application builds are available for Linux 32 and 64 bit, Windows 32 and 64 bit and MacIntel. Intel CPUs with AVX capabilities (Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake) will have a very large advantage, and Intel CPUs with FMA3 (Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake) will be the fastest.

ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. Tasks on one CPU core will take ~2 days on fast/newer computers and 7+ days on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)

Highly overclocked Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby Lake or Coffee Lake (i.e., Intel Core i7, i5, and i3 -4xxx or better) computers running the application will see fastest times. Note that CUL is running the latest FMA3 version of LLR which takes full advantage of the features of these newer CPUs. It's faster than the previous LLR app and draws more power and produces more heat. If you have a Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby Lake or Coffee Lake CPU, especially if it's overclocked or has overclocked memory, and haven't run the new FMA3 LLR before, we strongly suggest running it before the challenge while you are monitoring the temperatures.

Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.

Multi-threading optimisation instructions

Those looking to maximise their computer's performance during this challenge, or when running LLR in general, may find this information useful.

  • Your mileage may vary. Before the challenge starts, take some time and experiment and see what works best on your computer.
  • If you have an Intel CPU with hyperthreading, either turn off the hyperthreading in the BIOS, or set BOINC to use 50% of the processors.

    • If you're using a GPU for other tasks, it may be beneficial to leave hyperthreading on in the BIOS and instead tell BOINC to use 50% of the CPU's. This will allow one of the hyperthreads to service the GPU.

  • Use LLR's multithreaded mode. It requires a little bit of setup, but it's worth the effort. Follow these steps:

    • Create a app_config.xml file in the directory C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\www.primegrid.com\ (or wherever your BOINC data directory is located). For a quad core CPU, the file should contain the following contents. Change the two occurrences of "4" to the number of actual cores your computer has.

      <app_config> <app_version> <app_name>llrCUL</app_name> <cmdline>-t 4</cmdline> <avg_ncpus>4</avg_ncpus> </app_version> </app_config>

    • After creating the file, click on "Options/Read config files". You should then restart BOINC or reboot.
    • The first time BOINC downloads an CUL task, it may act a little strange and download 4 tasks instead of 1. The run times on this first set of tasks may look a bit strange too. This is normal. This will also occur anytime BOINC downloads more than one task at a time. This can be avoided by setting "Use at most [ 1 ] % of the CPUs" before you download CUL tasks. After one task was downloaded, increase the percentage.
    • Some people have observed that when using multithreaded LLR, hyperthreading is actually beneficial. We encourage you to experiment and see what works best for you.

Time zone converter:

The World Clock - Time Zone Converter

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section at the very top, above the countdown clock.

Scoring Information

Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only tasks issued AFTER 15th September 2018 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 22nd September 2018 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit. We will be using the same scoring method as we currently use for BOINC credits. A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.

At the Conclusion of the Challenge

We kindly ask users "moving on" to ABORT their tasks instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.

ABORTING tasks allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of an LLR Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING tasks causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until tasks expire to send them out to be completed.

Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)

About the Cullen Prime Search

A Cullen number in the form of n*2^n+1. Fr. James Cullen first studied these numbers in 1905 because they have interesting divisibility properties. It is conjectured that there are infinitely many n values that will yield Cullen primes, though it has been shown that almost all are composite.

Further reading:
Cullen Number on Wikipedia
Cullen prime Prime Pages' Glossary entry
Top Twenty Cullen Primes in Chris Caldwell's Database

The following n values yield prime Cullen numbers (OEIS A005849) (ones found at Primegrid highlighted):

1, 141, 4713, 5795, 6611, 18496, 32292, 32469, 59656, 90825, 262419, 361275, 481899, 1354828, 6328548, and 6679881.

What is LLR?

The Lucas-Lehmer-Riesel (LLR) test is a primality test for numbers of the form N = k*2^n βˆ’ 1, with 2^n > k. Also, LLR is a program developed by Jean Penne that can run the LLR-tests. It includes the Proth test to perform +1 tests and PRP to test non base 2 numbers. See also:

Hallo

excuse me, that's not true.

In 2013 there were 6.7 million liters of beer.
It was only in 2014 that we drank 1 million liters more beer.
1 mass costs meanwhile 10.80 € and the glasses are often not full.
When the foam is gone, the glass is 3/4 full.

All data here
https://www.oktoberfest.de/de/article/Oktoberfest+2018/Zahlen/Das+Oktoberfest+in+Zahlen/3735/

Too bad you can not bunker. So WUs now load, calculate and on
Upload start evening. If you did that, you would have 1000 results more!

On a 1950x a WU 1day lasts 6 hours with 4 used CPUs each WU.
So should hardly come on the first day results.

From 21.September 2018 ca 12: 00 UTC I need no new WUs start more,
because you would not be able to do this until the expiry date.

The Oktoberfest Challenge would have these long WUs until the end of the Oktoberfest
to run until October 7, 2018

With greetings
Thorsten

So I thought I would try The multithreaded mode this year and so cut and pasted it into the directory mentioned. This is what happened:

You've never crunched CUL before. Start one CUL workunit (you may abort it if you don't want to crunch it right now) and restart Boinc. This message will go away.

Gold badge almost 900,000 points, so I have crunched it before, just never multithreaded. I have 2,200 something tasks I am clearing and should finish 24 hours before the start and can further test this then. Thank you for the fast response.

Gold badge almost 900,000 points, so I have crunched it before...

It's computer specific, once you run CUL on the computer giving you the error it should go away.

Edit: Even if you ran this on the computer before, if you removed and reinstalled BOINC or reset Prime Grid after the last time you ran CUL it would also give you the error.

In 2014 we had a Cullen Race to the New Moon 8 day Challenge. 17,331 tasks returned a successful result, although they were down in the 11-12M range.
In 2015 we had a Cullen Reign Record 5 day Challenge. 5,517 returned a successful result in the 13M range.
In 2016 we had a combined CUL-WOO Cullen Birthday 9 day Challenge. 7,401 Cullen tasks returned a successful result in the 15M range.
And now here we are in 2018 with the Oktoberfest 7 day Challenge. So far 20 tasks have returned a successful result in the 16M range. Leading edge has now past 17M and some of the tasks with the larger FFT (increase from 1728K to 1792K) have been sent out. The smallest task with the 1792K FFT size is n=16,725,005, although it's not a given that there's no 1728K FFT tasks above that.

After 1 day:

Challenge: Oktoberfest
App: 4 (CUL-LLR)
(As of 2018-09-16 18:00:06 UTC)

6825 tasks have been sent out. [CPU/GPU/anonymous_platform: 6818 (100%) / 0 (0%) / 7 (0%)]

Of those tasks that have been sent out:

519 (8%) came back with some kind of an error. [519 (8%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]
701 (10%) have returned a successful result. [696 (10%) / 0 (0%) / 5 (0%)]
5605 (82%) are still in progress. [5603 (82%) / 0 (0%) / 2 (0%)]

Of the tasks that have been returned successfully:

632 (90%) are pending validation. [629 (90%) / 0 (0%) / 3 (0%)]
68 (10%) have been successfully validated. [66 (9%) / 0 (0%) / 2 (0%)]
0 (0%) were invalid. [0 (0%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]
1 (0%) are inconclusive. [1 (0%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]

The current leading edge (i.e., latest work unit for which work has actually been sent out to a host) is n=16778645. The leading edge was at n=16629587 at the beginning of the challenge. Since the challenge started, the leading edge has advanced 0.90% as much as it had prior to the challenge!

That's about 6 times the normal daily rate -- but since a lot of computers take more than a day to finish a task, especially if they're not using multi-threading, that's underestimating the actual processing rate.

No primes so far. It's been 9 years since the last Cullen prime.

Current tasks are about 5% longer than at the beginning of the challenge due to an increase in FFT size. Credit is increased proportionally. And, of course, as the numbers get larger the tasks take longer to process.

If I'm setting up multithreading, and I'm wanting to do it for multiple projects, apparently the following works:

<app_config>
<app_version>
<app_name>llrSR5</app_name>
<cmdline>-t 4</cmdline>
<avg_ncpus>4</avg_ncpus>
</app_version>
<app_version>
<app_name>llrCUL</app_name>
<cmdline>-t 4</cmdline>
<avg_ncpus>4</avg_ncpus>
</app_version>
</app_config>

I'm guessing that for each app just keep adding the <app_version> block?

That's correct. And for the list of applications names, please refer to

I didn't feel like being repetitive.

No primes. Yet.

EDIT: I don't like to withhold information, especially good information. If there was a prime, I'd let you know as soon as I did. We wouldn't expect a false positive on a Cullen prime, so as soon as I saw one computer reporting a Cullen prime I'd say say something.

Stupid question #47

I have an unwell laptop 'competing' in this challenge - it's reported return date is in approx 15 days, and this got me to thinking...

I assume that because the tasks were downloaded during the challenge - they will count to my challenge score (one day) even though they may not return a result for some time. I'm not in the running for any 'prizes' so it's no biggy, but...

What if I told my quick machine to download enough Cullen's for a month on the first day of the challenge? Do you only count those tasks that are 'started' during the challenge times as opposed to those 'downloaded' during the challenge times????

And if that is this case, could I (if I was being a dick) download a months worth, start each task then suspend each task and have them finish later and still claim credit???????

Just my evil mind taking over!

Thanx

Dad

Only tasks that are downloaded during the challenge and returned during the challenge count towards challenge credit. Anything returned after the challenge end date and time will not count towards challenge scores.

EDIT: I don't like to withhold information, especially good information. If there was a prime, I'd let you know as soon as I did. We wouldn't expect a false positive on a Cullen prime, so as soon as I saw one computer reporting a Cullen prime I'd say say something.

This is very nice !

Not quite... have you enabled Multi Threading? Sure, it's a laptop, but it should still be able to return a task or 2 if you enable it.

Only tasks that are downloaded during the challenge and returned during the challenge count towards challenge credit. Anything returned after the challenge end date and time will not count towards challenge scores.

This does not relate to primes which will be counted as somehow belonging to the challenge if the work-unit was downloaded while the challenge was running.
At least that's how it was for the last challenge.

Challenge: Oktoberfest
App: 4 (CUL-LLR)
(As of 2018-09-20 19:08:41 UTC)

Of those tasks that have been sent out:

1759 (11%) came back with some kind of an error. [1759 (11%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]
7235 (47%) have returned a successful result. [7207 (46%) / 0 (0%) / 28 (0%)]
6542 (42%) are still in progress. [6540 (42%) / 0 (0%) / 2 (0%)]

Of the tasks that have been returned successfully:

3272 (45%) are pending validation. [3256 (45%) / 0 (0%) / 16 (0%)]
3902 (54%) have been successfully validated. [3890 (54%) / 0 (0%) / 12 (0%)]
23 (0%) were invalid. [23 (0%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]
38 (1%) are inconclusive. [38 (1%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]

The current leading edge (i.e., latest work unit for which work has actually been sent out to a host) is n=16959880. The leading edge was at n=16629587 at the beginning of the challenge. Since the challenge started, the leading edge has advanced 1.99% as much as it had prior to the challenge!

And no primes. :)

I want a Beer badge if we find a Cullen prime during the challenge! In fact everyone who participates in the challenge should get one.

With a bit less than a day remaining in the challenge, it's time to remind everyone...

At the Conclusion of the Challenge

We would prefer users "moving on" to finish those tasks they have downloaded, if not then please ABORT the WU's (and then UPDATE the PrimeGrid project) instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.

ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of a Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed. Thank you!

Thanks for another fine challenge!
But, in my very personal opinion ten or fourteen days would have been even better to fight those lengthy tasks.
Thanks again! :-)

7 days is hardly long enough for those of us with non-high-end boy-toys to run sufficient Cullen tests to register on the list at all. For these jobs which are larger than some others, can we have a longer period so as to get some more jobs run?

Looking at your computer there are two things I would recommend trying.

1. I see four In Progress units. Given the run times I am going to assume you are running those four tasks all at once. Try running only two tasks at a time and see what your run times are. If they are less than half of what they currently are then you will get more done over time. The reason I suggest this is that your i3 is a dual core with hyper threading and running additional work units on the extra threads has been known to negatively impact overall throughput.

2. Try the app_config.xml modification as described in the first post of this thread. With that you can run one unit at a time on multiple cores. In this case you would want to see if running one unit at a time on multiple cores takes 1/4th of your current time or not.

Indeed. On an i3, the ideal configuration is to run only one task at a time but have it use two cores by using app_config.xml. Tasks run in this manner will be more than 4 times faster. Your computer is is an i3-4170. That's a Haswell class CPU with both AVX and FMA3 instruction sets. It's fast. Not as fast as the latest and greatest, but it has the most recent instruction sets and is capable of pumping out one task every (guess) 24 to 36 hours if configured correctly. I used three computers in this challenge that are significantly slower than yours:

1) A i3-4005U laptop. It's a Haswell like your CPU, but, being a laptop, it's significantly slower. It got 3 tasks done during the challenge.

2) A MUCH older and slower i3-550 desktop that lacks AVX or FMA3. At four days per task, it could only do one task during the challenge, but it could certainly get one done.

3) An even slower i3-M330 laptop which took about 4.5 days to do one task.

When running LLR, you should NOT use hyperthreading. It increases task run time by more than 100%. On your i3, you should only be running 2 tasks at once. Even better, use app_config.xml to run a single task on 2 cores. That will give you both the best speed (time for a single task to complete) AND the best throughput (number of tasks processed per day.) As an added bonus, when configured optimally you'll likely find that your computer is consuming less power and running cooler than it is now. NOT using hyperthreading consumes less power while simultaneously improving performance -- it's a win-win.

Installing a Linux flavoured OS might take your machine to further heights.

One of my machines is dual-boot just for PrimeGrid challenges, because Windows is a show-stopper when crunching. Installing a recent Linux kernel is faster, while installing an older Linux kernel might prove even faster because of the missing security patches in the later ones fixing this winter's unexpected security holes.
I run my main Linux machine with an older kernel because it is mainly used for crunching Boinc projects and looking at Boinc statistics on the web, and multimedia from local storage. I don't recommend using an allround-pc without a recent kernel, especially if you're digging through the web with it.

Well, to extract the interesting parts:
If you don't need your machines to run Windows all the time, consider installing Linux on a second drive to be able to crunch at full speed. Although I'm rather a fan of Debian, I'd recommend an Ubuntu flavour.

I haven't repeated the exercise in a long time, but last time I tested this out, I found a well configured Windows system to perform no differently to a linux based system. Of course, the caution is in the "well configured" part. Linux defaults might just have worked a little better in some scenarios than Windows defaults, but they can be optimised out if present. Most of it is due to HT and Windows scheduler.

Please have a look at typical run-times of Windows and Linux machines on different projects.
I'm certain you'll note the differences.
Windows has too much system overhead.
