Today is June 3rd and yet I still have a work unit/task from June 1 that is still waiting for validation. Could this mean a Prime was found but it is waiting for the result to be validated?

Each WU needs at least 2 different people to return a result for it to validate. When your task is showing as "Pending Validation", it just means that you've returned your result to the server already, but the other person assigned the job (usually called wingman) didn't finished processing yet. It may or may not be prime, but it isn't 99.99% of the time.

Just wait a few days and it should validate. Things take a while to validate sometimes. For example, this guy has been waiting ever since Jan to have it's WU validated!

I believe if a WU has not been validated by the first wingman in N number of hours... then it should be assigned to a second wingman to get the project moving. Any thoughts on this idea?

It does that already, just that "N" might be a much bigger number than you think. It varies depending on project, but it is at least some days. If extra units were sent out too soon, it would result in unnecessary work being done and actually slow down progress. There is no speed element here. If a unit times out, it will eventually get resent.

Those tasks (looks like PPS MEGA you're talking about) have a four-day expiration and another 25 hours of grace period. But in the case of your wingman, it looks like he's abandoned 239 tasks. Either that or he doesn't always have an internet connection. Those tasks will all automatically time out and the server will reassign them to someone else. This happens constantly and as a policy we do not interfere with that process.

On some of the longer jobs, I've seen users wait 9 months for a wingman to finish in extreme cases. You might want to stay away from Seventeen or Bust.

I suspect that if the first participant returns "prime!" and this WU happens to be abandoned or times out a number of times, then someone will notice and run one or more "extra" tests manually, before nine months or something have passed. Then the prime can be published with "double-checker: to be announced".

Most likely the WU that steveking talks about, was "non-prime" according to the test result he sent in himself. Therefore, it can only be prime if an error happened on his computer. In that case, he will not be credited as the discoverer.

Quite correct, it's not showing as prime. When I first came on as someone behind the scenes I realized that there wasn't any good way to spot primes in progress. Admins were grepping through the upload directories, which could take a very long time and impacted the rest of the server. I wrote a page that accomplishes the same thing without all the heavy disk impact. It lists all the primes currently on the system, whether proven, debunked or awaiting a wingman. The reason we keep false primes on there is that then that host is flagged in red and any current "primes" from that same host are similarly flagged. So we can glance at the list and know which candidates not to get too excited about.

Before anyone asks where they can see this marvelous page, it's limited to those who run PrimeGrid. Primes are made public as soon as they're 1) verified and 2) reported. The other thing about that page is that there's no anonymity - the owner is shown for every host. So I can't even paste a screenshot here of the proven primes section. That page is the first thing I look at every morning, so you can be certain that we're aware of pending primes early on.
