I see that there are some openCL apps for PPS Sieve. Any chance we could get one for Intel HD GPU, for windows?

I concur. Great idea. My hd4000 is working fine in collatz.

So find someone who can build the sieve for Intel. The admins here write some code, but volunteers have written much of the GPU codes.

There is another openCL app at primegrid, sort of. On PRPnet we have wwwwcl for the Wieferich and Wall-Sun-Sun projects. I realize that's not exactly what you asked for, and that PRPnet isn't everyone's cup of tea. However wwwwcl blazes along at 10-20 (?) times the speed of its CPU counterpart (but I think there are problems when run on ATI cards that are still being tracked down).

This leads back to the initial question about Intel IGPs. I also would love to have something to run on the HD4000 on board my 3770K, but I can't seem to get anything to work. For BOINC, I believe the first requirement is at least version 7.0.40 of the client software; that lets me out since I'm still on 6.10.58. So I thought I'd try wwwwcl instead, on the box with the 3770K and GTX570 (times 2). From looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log (did I mention I run Ubuntu 12.10?) it looks like if a video i/f doesn't actually have a display attached at boot time, the driver unloads, and that renders that GPU unusable. So that means I'd need to get another monitor or maybe a 'dummy plug', I'd guess. But, even with a monitor attached to the IGP's DVI port (and yes I did have a good display with x-windows running after a reboot), I got the following error:

% ./wwwwcl -l OpenCL Error: Unknown in call to clGetPlatformIDs Please (re)install OpenCL as described at http://developer.amd.com/gpu/ATIStreamSDK/assets/ATI_Stream_SDK_Installation_Notes.pdf %

When configured as I normally am, with the monitor attached to the 570's, I get this:
% ./wwwwcl -l List of available platforms and devices Platform 0 is a NVIDIA Corporation NVIDIA CUDA, version OpenCL 1.1 CUDA 4.2.1 Device 0 is a NVIDIA Corporation GeForce GTX 570 Device 1 is a NVIDIA Corporation GeForce GTX 570 %

So, I didn't get very far. Maybe it was hopeless from the start. I believe that my drivers (package xserver-xorg-video-intel) are up to date, at least for Ubuntu 12.10. Bottom line at least in my experience so far is that yeah, an Intel IGP isn't usable (yet) on PG or PRPnet. Anyone who sees flaws or oversights in my experimentation should feel free to publicly point them out :-)

Yeah, You have to use the current version of BOINC client. Also, you have to have OpenCL installed (available from intel, 1.2 current version).

Crunching works fine at SETI Beta (Astropulse), and Collatz.

As for OpenCL apps here at Primegrid, I was referring to the PPS (Sieve) sub-project. There is an OpenCL app for OSX, openclPPSsieveMAC. It is what get's sent for using the ATI GPU on my Mac.

So I was hoping it would be a simple thing for the creator of that, to also create a version for the intel HD 4000 (and above).

It already exists -- the Windows and Linux apps are identical to the Mac app. The only difference is we had to change the naming on the Mac app because of a problem with the Mac BOINC client. All three are openCL and should theoretically run on any openCL device.

The Linux/Windows ATI apps are also openCL. Try running that app either manually or under app_info and see if it works. If it does, we can look at what's necessary to get it to work automatically.

Any proposal Michael of what I should write in the app_info file? I know almost nothing about configuring the file.

app_config ... go here (and scroll to the bottom of the page):

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration

Make it with Notepad, call it "app_config.xml" (no quotes), and save it to the Project Directory you are trying to configure in your PC directory:

//.... program data/boinc/projects/www.primegrid.com

Its very easy to use - compared to a cc_config and app_info nightmare, its Sheer Bliss :)

This is what mine looks like - don't copy it exactly, its unlikely to work on yours, but it will give you an idea:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>llrSR5</name>
<max_concurrent>11</max_concurrent>
</app>
</app_config>

This is an app_config for another project where I use(d) GPUs, again don't copy it exactly, but it gives you the format and layout for GPUs:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>solo_collatz</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.25</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.1</cpu_usage>
</gpu_version>
</app>
</app_config>

AFAIK, there's no switch to make the application even detect anything but ATI GPUs. No CPU (although it actually did work on CPU before Ken restricted it to GPU only), no NVIDIA GPU (did not work back in early testing stages anyway, but might just require recompiling with NVIDIA SDK), not sure about Intel GPU.

I recommend downloading the application and run the following test on command line:

primegrid_tpsieve_1.39_windows_intelx86__atiPPSsieve.exe -p42070e9 -P42070010e6 -k 1201 -K 9999 -N 2000000 -c 60

If you have more that one GPU, you may try adding --device 1 for the second GPU, --device 2 for the third and so on.

Prime Grid apps are app_config enabled at the server, what I cant remember is the short title for the app_config to run PPSieve (it actually maybe PPSieve - but I am checking trying to find what the short title is for the app_config.

Meanwhile .... have a look at:

Messages: 47760, 47762 and 47763. You only need use an app_info when running an app version that's not current at the Project - the other 99% of times, app_config will do the job far better, with less messing around - all the work is done server-side.

Thanks Zydor. I know about that.
But I don't know how to configure it to run PPSieve on Intel GPU.

For this to work, you must be running BOINC 7.0.40+

Try this, paste it into the project directory (create it with Notepad) and call it "app_config.xml" (no quotes) :

<app_config>
<app>
<name>pps_sr2sieve</name>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>1</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.1</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

(do NOT use an app_info when using app_config, app_info is replaced by the app_config)

That example will run two instances of the app, one each on two GPU cores. If you only want to run one instance, change:

<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent> to: <max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>

The <cpu_usage> section above will give 0.1 cpu core per GPU app instance. If you wanted more cpu allocated per gpu instance you change it ... for example:

<cpu_usage>0.2</cpu_usage> gives you 0.2 cpu core per gpu instance

The <max_concurrent> section is there to show the TOTAL number of instances run, ie the ADDITION of both GPU and CPU instances on the machine. However in your case you are only running GPU apps not CPU as well, so you dont have that additional complication. Just note it for future use.

If you are running two or more GPUs, make sure you have a suitably amended cc_config in the BOINC directory, for example:

<cc_config>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

Without that its likely BOINC will only recognise one GPU, whatever you put inside the app_config.

Once all that is set, thats it - all future updates are done server-side by the Project Team, you'll never need to change it unless your hardware (CPU/GPU) changes, the Project Team will automatically supply updated exe file as they are created, you just crunch on :)

Full format instructions are at (scroll to the bottom of the page):

Now we just need an app_info.xml (not app_config.xml) to try real work.

FYI, app_config.xml does *NOT* replace app_info.xml (aka anonymous platform). app_config.xml is a simpler way to do *some* of the app_info.xml functionality. But it does not do all the things app_info.xml can do. And in this case, it requires app_info.xml to 1) fool the server into sending work to a device it does not (yet) know, and 2) define a local executable.

It's working! Here is the app_info.xml that I used. Because the server doesn't "know" intel GPUs, the trick it to list the app as both CPU *and* opencl_intel_100. So BOINC asks for CPU tasks, which the server sends, and then runs them as opencl_intel_100 GPU tasks. This trick over on SETI. Of course, the long term solution is to update the server so that it knows intel GPUs. Collatz and SETI Beta have done this successfully, FYI.

Once I have a completed task, I will post it. It looks like it will take about 6 hours to complete.

Yes it does replace it .... you cannot run both at the same time

If there are more complex things to do then an app_info must be used.

However, 99.9% of tasks can now be completed using an app_config, and app_info is no longer needed, as the server will now automatically detect 99% of what it needs by querying the PC without your intervention (which is why its so small), without what used to be supplied by the User in an app_info.

The two complement each other - but - they are mutually exclusive, they must not, and cannot, be run at the same time.

Yes, we are saying the same thing for the most part. When I said the app_config.xml does not replace the app_info.xml, I mean that it did not supersede it. app_config.xml is just an additional tool that can be used by BOINC, but it does not do all the same things as app_info.xml. The reverse is also true. There are some things that app_config.xml can do that app_info.xml cannot. Also, some projects do not allow anonymous platform, such as WCG. And so the only option in that case is app_config.xml

And yes, you can use them both at the same time. You can use app_info.xml to define a custom app (for example), and also use app_config.xml to control behavior, including some options that app_info.xml does not provide (max_concurrent). I do this all the time.

In any case, to do what we are trying to do here, run an app provided by the user instead of the server, for a plan_class that the server does not understand, the only option is app_info.xml. app_config.xml does not have that functionality.

Below is the app_info in question, I have highlighted what the server (now) doesn't know. The bolded information is all the Server now needs, a full blown app_info is not required. If individuals wish to use an app_info, that's fine, but its telling the server what it already knows, and becomes pointless.

The only time an app_info is now needed is when:

1. A different app version other than the general release is run(eg testing a new app)
2. You wish to run non standard configurations and settings (overwhelming vast majority of time, the server knows better than you do what the optimum fine detail settings are)

The bold parts below are the only things the server doesn't know, and needs telling in an app_config

Everything else - not in bold letters- is superfluous, it already knows, hence the reason only an app_config is needed. Essentially all the user now does is say "I want to run "x" CPU apps and "Y" GPU apps, please send me the new apps automatically when published". An app_config.xml version of your app_info is:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>pps_sr2sieve</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>1</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.1</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

After that, that's it, the server will update the application automatically, and you don't need to write a new app_info. Those ten lines above replace your app_info. If you wish to write an app_info, go ahead, no problem, but its wholey superfluous now and not required. As noted above the app_config stays for ever and a day, it will send new apps automatically when versions change.

app_config.xml is small and "fire and forget". However, if for some reason you wish to use app_info, use it - just be aware all you are doing is telling the server what it already knows, and that's pretty pointless at the end of the day.

You missed one. The server does not yet know:

<plan_class>opencl_intel_100</plan_class>

And even if the server did know it, there is no app available for opencl_intel_100 plan class.

app_config.xml can not resolve either of those issues.

Try running that app either manually or under app_info and see if it works. If it does, we can look at what's necessary to get it to work automatically.

In that case there is no point is telling it something it cant use as its not available....

When it becomes available the server will already be aware and doesn't need telling.

That's why app_config works and saves huge time - all we are doing is telling the server what it doesn't know ... in ten lines.

This is why I have entries in the app_info.xml for both CPU and opencl_intel_100. It causes the client to ask for both. The server does not understand the request for the opencl_intel_100 work, and it is ignored. When the server delivers tasks for the CPU, the client will assign them to the opencl_intel_100 GPU to crunch them.

If you believe the app_config.xml will do it, go for it. Show us. I would love to run the simpler app_config.xml instead.

Edit: About the "no point is telling it something it cant use" comment: The information for the app_info.xml is not used exclusively by the server. The client also uses some of that information. And in this case, it is telling the client that the tasks associated to the application can be used by the CPU and the GPU.

The last time such "faking" of the server was proposed, Raistmer quickly said not to use it.

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=70717&postid=1371243

Whether that's correct or not in this case, what you are raising propels it into the 0.1% of cases where app_info has to be used.

Where care needs taking is to create an impression that app_config connot be used at all on a Project. It is now by far the preferred and recomended method, and app_info is now the fallback for special cases.

To leave it open where the impression is given that this project has to use app_info or nothing is not a route we should be going down

? I am not sure where this is coming from. I am a huge fan of app_config.xml, and use it all the time across many projects. It is always my first choice, and I use it instead of app_info.xml where possible. So I don't understand why you are acting like I am attacking app_config.xml, or why you feel you need to defend it.

I never said that app_config.xml cannot be used on this, or any other project. I said it would not work to solve this particular issue.

As for using the app_info.xml to get it to work for the new plan class, I was instructed to do so by the project admin.

Raistmer is the one who came up with the app_info.xml work-around method, to get work from the server, and he and helped me to get it to work as you can see in that very same thread. He never said to not use the method. He said not to use that app.

How certain are you that this ran on the GPU and not the CPU? The elapsed time and the cpu time on that task are almost identical. Your run time is somewhat faster than normal, but if the opencl app was running on the CPU it would be making use of all the cores.

(opencl can run on CPUs also)

It was running CPU tasks from another project on the CPU cores at the same time. Also, the GPU load was 100%.

Edit: FWIW, tasks from the other projects I have run on HD 4000 (Astropulse & Collatz) both use a LOT of CPU, usually a full thread. If the same is true for this app, then maybe that would account for similar GPU and CPU time.

Cool, but is it really worth it if its going to go THAT slow? even my 50$ nvidia gt 520 does pps sieve faster than that.

Heck yes!

1) It is purely additive. Why waste an idle GPU? And you can run this in addition to your discrete GPUs in your machines.

2) This is the slowest of the Intel HD GPUs that can crunch. The haswell and better chips will only be faster. And these Intel chips are everywhere. Even with poor performance (for now), you multiply that by the volume of CPUs, and the output is massive.

What we are doing here is getting everything in place for volume.

Edit: Ding! Second task completed:

http://www.primegrid.com/result.php?resultid=461190096

The run time was almost identical. The first task, I has two threads reserved. This task ran for about 1/3 the same, and then I changed it to zero reserved tasks. It still consumed a full thread (which slowed down the 7 CPU tasks accordingly), but had no impact on the run time of the GPU task.

Note, this has all been with the 32 bit app. I will try out the same experiment with the 64 bit app soon.

Excellent work. I will attempt to follow in your footsteps although mainly just as an academic exercise, as relegating an entire CPU core to service the IGP does not appeal to me as my S.O.P. It looks like at least 256MB will need to be dedicated to the IGP running pps sieve (not that that is a lot; just something for people to know).

Are you concerned about the 89C reading for the GPU?

Not worried about the temp.

- This is a dedicated cruncher. I will run it until it dies in any case. But these IB CPUs seem to be pretty bullet proof.

- This was an experimental cruncher I built, to see how small and cheap a cruncher I could build, and still have a non-mobile, 8 thread i7. It is the size of a hardback book. So cooling is not it's strong point.

Edit: P.S. 4 tasks completed now, all valid, all with almost identical run times.

Whoops. I misread the application list. There is no windows 64 bit ATI application. So I won't be doing this after all.

The PPS sieve for Intel GPU is currently not working on one of my boxes;

Scenario:
OS: Mac OS X 10.9.1 (Darwin 13.1.0)
BOINC client version 7.2.33 for x86_64-apple-darwin
OpenCL: Intel GPU 0: HD Graphics 4000 (driver version 1.2(Feb 7 2014 18:36:33), device version OpenCL 1.2, 1024MB, 1024MB available, 154 GFLOPS peak)

Referring to Message #67384 in this thread I have downloaded the corrosponding Mac application "primegrid_tpsieve_1.39_x86_64-apple-darwin__atiPPSsieveMAC" and have also prepared the corrosponding app_info.xml file in the primegrid project directory.
After adjustment of the rights and permissions of both files I have tested the application via the following command:

"...

Additional info:

The same error (task fetch denied with PPS sieve for Intel GPU) has occured with the recent BOINC client 7.2.42 on Mac OS X 10.9.2.
I have reverted to the prior version 7.2.33 due to other work fetch issues with AVX10GFN; see Message #74165

The PPS sieve for Intel GPU is currently not working on one of my boxes;

I'm pretty sure it's not working on ANY boxes. There is no PPS sieve app for Intel GPUs. Accordingly, the server is not set up to send out Intel GPU tasks.

As far as I know, PPS-Sieve won't work on an Intel GPU. Even if you could download it, or tried to run it with app_info, I don't think it would work.

Even though it's an OpenCL app, I believe it's written to look only for ATI GPUs.

Oops..

I was referring to the Mac equivalent of the application mentioned in message #67384 earlier in this thread.
Maybe just a misunderstanding on my side, but I concluded from message #67298 that there should be an analogous application for the Mac (i.e. "primegrid_tpsieve_1.39_x86_64-apple-darwin__atiPPSsieveMAC")

Furthermore, as I reported in my post #75499 the application has been successfully run a test command via CLI.

Dazed and confused

Joerg
