Message 60848 - Posted: 30 Dec 2012 | 14:38:05 UTC

During the Winter Solstice Challenge it was found that the old Sieve application (1.38) is still on for Windows with ATI cards. The newer application fixed a blank file upload and getting 0 points. 9 months ago it was fixed for all other platforms.

This is a waste of resources as the same unit can go to multiple ATI cards before finally getting to something that reports correctly.

Unsure why it was missed during the install of all the other 1.39 applications, but it's time to please fix this. I am tired of getting 0 credit for valid work.

Thanks Michael. Appreciate the though. I know things get busy and some stuff gets missed. Just a wish for the new year.

PB27: Was just looking at your avatar picture...

Assuming that's not just some picture you picked up on the internet, what's the hardware in the background? The printer might be an Epson MX-80, perhaps? What's the computer? I'm thinking TRS-80, but I don't think that's it. A lot of old computers looked something like that.

Ah, good ole' HeathKit. I remember those fondly. I had several US Robotics modems, and I also used to have an ASR-33 teletype with a built in 110 baud modem. ASR was the version with the paper tape punch & reader. Sounds like the same model I had.

I was in high school at the time, and they had a bunch of ASR-33s (without the modem) hooked up to an HP 2000 series minicomputer. I got the maintenance manuals and essential became their repair guy for the teletypes. The mechanism in those things was an amazing piece of engineering, when you consider that everything in there was done mechanically with no electronics. I'm pretty sure there was not a single digital circuit in the whole device. Today if you wanted to build something like that you would use a bunch of actuators and a micro-controller to do everything. The teletype had no electronics, and all the encoding, decoding, and mechanical manipulations were done using a Rube Goldberg like mechanical maze of levers and bars and stuff. Simply amazing.

Since I was in Jr. High, I did not remember the model number, but ASR-33 teletype does sound right. When the mainframe was down, we played with the punch tape. Printed many Peanuts characters, and other designs that were given to us by the teacher.

In HS I programmed PL/1 and COBOL on punch cards. Then I used Digital dot matrix terminals with 300 baud modems, then to VT52 and VT100s. I programmed many languages back then. Now I write code on Cisco appliances as a network engineer. I am not limited to Cisco, but it's the majority of the appliances we use. I also run Checkpoint, Palo Alto and I still have to touch some older Nortel switches, etc.

The good old days where I was regularly using a soldering gun, now today I hardly do any hardware work, except to add/remove, migrate network appliances and cards. The most manual I do with my computers is blow out the dust (I did replace a couple of optical drives in one of my computers this year). I tried replacing a power supply but needed help since the new harnesses are annoying.

We had those 300 baud DEC terminals in my college labs -- they were called DECWriters. Fast (for the time) and much quieter than the teletypes. Used a lot of DEC video terminals too back then.

Fun times.

I could talk about the old days for a long time. Miss some of that simplicity. Helped run BBSes and a small ISP. Taught old networking classes at the Tech College.

Thinking of the old 8080 chip, to the multi-core, multi-threaded beasts we have now. Remembering BBSes, one or two phone lines on a system to the high speed most of us have in our home. DecNet, 10-BASE-2 and 10-BASE-T, ISDN, Frame Relay, etc.

It boggles the mind to think of BOINC, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc and how all that was created in just the last few decades of home computers.

Ah nostalgia.

TheDawgz share your boggled minds!

Our first exposure to computing was "programming" an IBM-1620 in High School.

Our first real world full-time job was with Control Data Corp. servicing Cyber 170's and Cyber 18-20's.

Not TheDawgz in the picture.

Me Too. IBM 1620, in High School. What a bizarre coincidence.

... Cyber 170's and Cyber 18-20's.

Each of the 10 platter 14" disk packs stored a whopping 300MB[/size]

I think the 1620 wins. :)

The IBM 1620 that we had was one of the fancy ones with lots of peripherals, including a hard disk drive. (For you youngins out there, that kind of computer was generally used by loading a program from punch cards, running the program, and then the output was either printed on the line printer (if it had one) or punched onto more punch cards.) The disk drive, which used (guessing) 20 inch disk packs with about a half dozen platters, stored 10 or 20 million words. This was a decimal computer, so each word stored one decimal digit. To put things in context, the largest known prime number wouldn't even fit on the entire disk, assuming it help 10 million words.

And, of course, you couldn't use the computer until the magnetic cores got up to sufficient operating temperature. If you were having a particularly bad day, the computer's "thermal" light would illuminate, indicating an over-temperature condition before the cores got warm enough to operate.

On the other hand, the light bulbs in the console caused considerable electromagnetic interference (EMI), so it was possible to program the 1620 the change the pattern of which bulbs were lit at just the right frequency such that an AM radio placed on the console would play music generated by that EMI. "Flight of the Bumblebees" was a favorite of ours.

As the sieve gets deeper and deeper, more and more sieve units are returning no found composites. On ATI for Windows this means 0 credit for the work and the work is being multiple checked when it does not need to.

I know it's a process to change applications, but this one is going to start turning me away from sieving for now as I am wasting time on good work that is being thrown away.

I am not talking about the credit, it's just silly to see these sieve units sent out to multiple machines just to get the same answer.

We need someone (you?) to do a short test with an ATI Windows app to make sure it works correctly. Then we can install it. Or blow up PG trying. :)

Instructions for doing the test:

First, download the 1.39 app from this link:

http://www.primegrid.com/download/primegrid_tpsieve_1.39_windows_intelx86__ati13ati.exe

Then run it with the command line:

primegrid_tpsieve_1.39_windows_intelx86__ati13ati.exe -p4200T -P4200000001M -k3 -K9999 -n6M -N9M -ffactor.txt

This will run on a very small section of the sieve, so hopefully it won't find any factors and the "factor.txt" file should contain the string "no factors". If it does, we can make that live.

EDIT: Made the sieve range even smaller so that there's no factors found.

primegrid_tpsieve_1.39_windows_intelx86__ati13ati.exe -p4200T -P4200000001M -k3 -K9999 -n6M -N9M -ffactor.txt

This will run on a very small section of the sieve, so hopefully it won't find any factors and the "factor.txt" file should contain the string "no factors". If it does, we can make that live.

Works for me (HD5850, Win7 x64, Catalyst 13.1).

Ok, the 1.39 version of the Windows ATI app should now be live. Let me know how it goes.

EDIT: It's really live now. It's being sent out now instead of 1.38/

Is PPS Sieve really at the stage of returning no factors regularly? I've been slowly watching my "average factors per task found" count drop from something like 5.3 to 4.25 over the last year and a half, and I'm aware that such averages should often be taken with a pinch of salt (especially since I've not been doing PPS Sieve constantly, I think I stopped completely for the best part of a year), but I've just returned 4 WUs, which together found a total of 14 factors according to my "Factors found" count.

Since the 27th, my two machines sent back 7 sieves with no factors. That's and average of almost 2 a day. It was averaging about 1 every 4-5 days before this.

Sieving is awesome work and really helps with paring down the work for LLR. I am sure that it's just like any other numbers, there will be times when a lot of factors are found, then times when there are none. Primes do the same thing, sometimes several are found in a short set of numbers, then there are times none are found for quite a while.

It is nice to be able to help. I have considered PG my main project for a while now and plan on doing some work here even after I get all my ruby badges.

I am also glad the team here do listen to their crunchers. You guys are the best.

Is PPS Sieve really at the stage of returning no factors regularly?

It does happen. Right now we're sieving 3M<=n<6M in BOINC and 6M<=n<9M manually. At some point when it doesn't pay to sieve 3M-6M any further, we'll move 6M-9M to BOINC. At that point the manual sieving will start on 9M<=n<12M.

JimB, how do you determine the point when it's useless to go on sieving a range?

I'm just wondering how do we compare apples to orranges (GPU to CPU)? Should we compare average time spent to find a factor to the time spent by CPU to prove a prime?

Then, what GPU and CPU do we choose for the comparison?

Or is it proper to compare watts spent on finding a factor to proving a prime?

Lennart is the person who'll determine that. It's not necessarily an easy call to make. Yes, it has to do with how long the sieving takes and how many factors are found vs. how long it takes for LLR to run on a candidate.

At the moment, though, it's far more common to find multiple factors in one WU than none, isn't it? CW Sieve kept on going until it was extremely rare to find one factor, I mean, I came late to the CUDA party, and so this is my record:

..whilst the two PPS Sieve WUs which completed on this PC whilst I was writing this post found 5 factors (between them). So surely if we're going to sieve as deeply as we did with GCW, at any range, we've got a long way to go? Or is it that GCW seive was targeting a much wider range than these individual ranges of PPS sieves?

Again, no problems at all, just wondering aloud.

Or is it proper to compare watts spent on finding a factor to proving a prime?

That would be a can of worms, wouldn't it? And almost impossible to be accurate in any attempt to measure; you could even have two systems which are "identical" in that they have exactly the same CPU, mobo, and even RAM, but then one computer might have a dust-filled PSU out of a broken 2002 Dell workstation, whilst the other has an expensive platinum-certified PSU. And in the years to come some people will be crunching on mobiles and tablets, others will be using Core2s and Pentium Ds or whatever Intel call their low-range CPUs, and some will be using 14nm Broadwell CPUs with low-voltage DDR4.

Can someone work out how many watts it would take for an average Pentium 66 machine to crunch a current leading-edge SoB or short Genefer WU please? ;-)

CW sieved far longer than PPS ever will, because it takes so long to run those candidates through LLR. There are some subprojects here where you could justify sieving practically forever, like the World Record GFN. In that case we're comparing GPU sieving to GPU prime-testing, so it's a lot easier to figure out the breakeven point.

The LLR tests don't take a lot of time, so you'd stop sieving a lot sooner. You stop sieving when you can test candidates more efficiently than sieving them.

I didn't post it before, but this table shows actual factor density and how much it decreases as you keep sieving. That's from the manual sieving for 6M<=n<9M, where we're a little above 4P. PPS sieving on BOINC (3M<=n<6M) is at around 250P and is probably returning less than 2% of the factor density of the manual sieving. Plus, remember that a lot of the candidates being returned by sieving were already removed from the sieve file at an earlier range. I believe about 31% of factors currently found result in a removal.

edited to fix a typo and to make it more easily understandable

That seems very obvious now actually... being a bit slow, there. Cheers for the explanation!
