Welcome to the Winter Solstice Challenge

The Final Challenge of the 2012 Challenge series is upon us. The Winter Solstice Challenge will be a 3 day (72 hour) celebration on account of the winters solstice. The challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid's most successful sieve, the Proth Prime Search (Sieve) application. Come join us and warm yourself by the Solstice fires!

The Winter Solstice...a predictable event in nature that has occurred for billions of years. A way point in the cyclic motion of the Universe. Many of the today's major winter festivals and celebrations can trace their origins back to this event...the longest night of the year (or the shortest day).

We'd like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday...whatever festival or celebration you may observe.

NOTE: The servers are located in the Northern Hemisphere; therefore, we'll observe winter. However, the Southern Hemisphere will be experiencing the Summer Solstice.

To participate in the Challenge, please select only the PPS (Sieve) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 18 December 2012 11:11 UTC and end 21 December 2012 11:11 UTC. Application builds are available for the following:

  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.38 (ati13ati)
  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.39 (cuda23)

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.

Scoring Information

Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 18 December 2012 11:11 UTC and received BEFORE 21 December 2012 11:11 UTC will be considered for credit. Since this is a fixed credit project, we'll be using cobblestones for scoring.

Credit is currently set at 3371 cobblestones per WU.

About the Proth Prime Search

The Proth Prime Search is done in collaboration with the Proth Search project. This search looks for primes in the form of k*2^n+1. With the condition 2^n > k, these are often called Proth primes. This project also has the added bonus of possibly finding factors of "classical" Fermat numbers or Generalized Fermat numbers. As this requires PrimeFormGW (PFGW) (a primality-testing program), once PrimeGrid finds a prime, it is then tested on PrimeGrid's servers for divisibility.

Our initial goal was to double check all previous work up to n=500K for odd k<1200 and to fill in any gaps that were missed. We have accomplished that now and have increased it to n=800K. PG LLRNet searched up to n=200,000 and found several missed primes in previously searched ranges. Although primes that small did not make it into the Top 5000 Primes database, the work was still important as it may have led to new factors for "classical" Fermat numbers or Generalized Fermat numbers. While there are many GFN factors, currently there are only about 292 "classical" Fermat number factors known. Current primes found in PPS definitely make it into the Top 5000 Primes database.

Once the 800K goal is reached, we may head to 1M before turning our focus to smaller k values and higher n values. For example, k<300 complete to n=2M, k<600 complete to n=1.5M and so on.

For more information about "Proth" primes, please visit these links:

About Proth Search

The Proth Search project was established in 1998 by Ray Ballinger and Wilfrid Keller to coordinate a distributed effort to find Proth primes (primes of the form k*2^n+1) for k < 300. Ray was interested in finding primes while Wilfrid was interested in finding divisors of Fermat number. Since that time it has expanded to include k < 1200. Mark Rodenkirch (aka rogue) has been helping Ray keep the website up to date for the past few years.

Early in 2008, PrimeGrid and Proth Search teamed up to provide a software managed distributed effort to the search. Although it might appear that PrimeGrid is duplicating some of the Proth Search effort by re-doing some ranges, few ranges on Proth Search were ever double-checked. This has resulted in PrimeGrid finding primes that were missed by previous searchers. By the end of 2008, all new primes found by PrimeGrid were eligible for inclusion in Chris Caldwell's Prime Pages Top 5000. Sometime in 2009, over 90% of the tests handed out by PrimeGrid were numbers that have never been tested. For 2010, we hope to complete our reservation to 800K and extend it to 1M.

PrimeGrid intends to continue the search indefinitely for Proth primes.

What is sieving?

Sieving is the first step to prime finding. In general, a sieve separates wanted/desired elements from unwanted material using a tool such as a mesh, net or other filtration or distillation methods. The word "sift" derives from this term. (Wikipedia - Sieve)

In PrimeGrid's case, the desired elements ultimately are prime numbers and the unwanted material are composite numbers. Our tool of choice for PPS sieve is Geoff Reynolds'/Ken Brazier's tpsieve program. It eliminates possible candidates by removing numbers that have small factors. As this process is much faster than primality testing, it is good to thoroughly sieve a data set before primality testing.

Sieving removes many candidates at the beginning. However, the deeper the sieve goes, the slower the rate of removal, till eventually sieving removes candidates at the same rate as primality testing. This is sometimes referred to as "optimal depth". Primality testing is recommended at this point.

There are many factors that determine how much time and how deep to sieve. After sieving, all the remaining candidates must be primality tested to determine their "prime" status.

That is OK for us in Northern Australia, We will just abbreviate it to WSC and claim it stands for "Wet Season Challenge".

Best of luck to the overclockers, spiders and @BOINCers from down here in the challenge. See you all there.

As the numbers get larger and less doable by cpu's will we be seeing more gpu clients?

Is Proth Prime Search (Sieve) the same as PPS (Sieve). There is no PPS (Sieve) listing on the page, I think this should be made a bit clearer

Very small or zero cache is best. If you can be at the keyboard just before the challenge start, also go NNT far enough in advance to burn off whatever you've got cached. Allow new tasks immediately after the start. Make sure your computer's clock is sync'd up beforehand, so you know the exact right time to press "GO" :-) If you can't be at the keyboard at the start, just set zero cache, and you'll only be one round of WU's behind at the start.

After the start on Sieve challenges like this one, I increase my cache to get at least a few hours work, to guard against network connectivity problems. On an LLR challenge, I'm ambivalent, as a larger cache will still address network issues, but reduces the odds that if you find a prime, you'll be the initial finder.

Everyone does something different, I guess it is a part of the skill of challenging.

My method is :-

1. If longer units are being done when the queue will finish a day or so before the challenge select SGS LLR as they are quick and I like to keep work going.

2. When there is enough SGS to last until the challenge set NO NEW WORK.

3. Change work preferences to the challenge tasks.

4. Set NETWORK AVAILABLE to one day, even if you are always connected.

5. Set KEEP WORK FOR n DAYS to the length of the challenge. With work restrictions at the start of the challenge this will not be met but it will get work when available.

6. When challenge starts unset NO NEW WORK and abort any remaining SGS units. Note that SUSPENDED work still counts as work in hand and can block new work being requested.

7. When you have work for the challenge set the NETWORK and KEEP WORK back to normal.

8. Just before the end of the challenge report all outstanding work unless you have the cc-config set to do that immediately. See some other post about work not being reported for cc_config details.

9. After a few days help to clean up reset to your favorite work.

10 If you are not going to help in the clean up then ABORT remaining work as letting it run out will slow down the clean up.

Good luck with the challenge.

What's the best way to make sure I'm not in the middle of a GFN world record task when the solstice starts? should i go ahead and uncheck world record (only have short tasks enabled) now, then a day or so prior to the challenge, switch everything to PPS sieve?

What's the best way to make sure I'm not in the middle of a GFN world record task when the solstice starts? should i go ahead and uncheck world record (only have short tasks enabled) now, then a day or so prior to the challenge, switch everything to PPS sieve?

About four weeks before the challenge starts deselect GFNWR, i.e. about 3 weeks ago.

Without a current version of the Tardis (see Dr Who) the best option is probably to stop getting any new work now and reduce the work holding limit to 0.5 days. Set it back to something more than the remaining time on the GFNWR when the challenge starts and suspend the GFNWU. That should get and run challenge units. Don't forget to select the PPS GPU work for the current challenge, If the GFNWR work will not finish before the challenge you can do that now.

As the work holding is limited to 10 days you may have to abort the GFNWR or abort this challenge as BOINC will count suspended work as work in progress for the purposes of getting new work.

This problem does not normally arise, the GFNWR being very long WUs and the challenge also using the GPU makes for unusual problems for challengers to overcome. Good luck.

I went ahead and set GFN to "short tasks" only. I have two WR tasks going right now...one should finish tomorrow...the other I may have to abort.

Can you better explain the "work holding limit" stuff? I didn't quite catch the drift of it. I found the option in Computing preferences to 'maintain work for an additional -- days,' but am not certain how that plays into potentially working around the GFNWR that I won't complete before the 17th.

The "work holding limit" is set by adjusting the 'maintain work for an additional -- days,' setting, they are the same thing but I could not remember the exact words as I wrote. If the last GFNWR has 2 days to run (according to the computer estimate which may not match reality) then if you suspend it and set 'maintain work for an additional -- days,' to 5 days you should get and run work OK for the challenge. The problem comes if it has more than 9 days to run when you cannot suspend it and still get much work for the challenge.

GFN short are now taking about 2 days for me, they used to be 15 hours so keep an eye on the finish times as the challenge gets closer.

I now have everything except PPS sieve disabled, so I ought to be crunching them well in advance of when the challenge starts. I don't know if I'm up to the task of managing NNT and cache on all my hosts, so I'll just run 'em run from now through the end of the challenge.

I have a question though.

Should I set "Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work" to "no?"

if you have set the % of resource share to 0 on the other tasks and high on

primegrid.

then as new work for primegrid becomes available,

the other tasks will suspend.

just remember to set primegrid to 100 and everything else to 0.

You should lower your cache to 0.05 (or lower) on both work buffer settings so you won't have a ton of WUs in queue at the start of the challenge as any WU downloaded before then will not count. You can increase it anytime AFTER the start.

I have a question though.

Should I set "Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work" to "no?"

Absolutely

I would set it to no for now.

Remember that work has to be BOTH downloaded and returned within the challenge period. Any work you may be doing before the start of the challenge will not count for the challenge, so you need a near empty computer when the challenge starts.

If you have a permanent internet connection, you should set your cache to 0 (zero). As DaveB noted, only work downloaded and returned after the beggining of the challenge will count. So, if you have a 6 hours cache (0.25), you will start crunching challenge tasks 6 hours later.

Message 60457 - Posted: 15 Dec 2012 | 16:04:26 UTC

I checked various websites (US Naval Observatory, skyandtelescope.com, timeanddate.com, a few others) and an iCal calendar, and found a mix of quotes for the solstice at both 11:11 and 11:12 UTC, with the latter being somewhat more prevalent. It's probably just a matter of dropping the seconds component vs. rounding. 11:11 seems nicer for us, since 11 is prime.

I have not much experiences with PrimeGrid ..

AFAIK, PrimeGrid have a *limit of tasks in progress* for GPU.

Is this *limit of tasks in progress* separately for CPU and GPU - or together for the whole PC?

Thanks.

It's a very special event for me because 2 years ago Winter Solstice chelly was my and team's first experience in challenging. I was 405th and the team was 135th. A lot of things have changed since then but Primegrid is still one of our favorite projects.
Keep The Fire Alive is 2 years now! It's cool to celebrate this date in action!

Everybody have a nice crunching and let's make some noise!

All you need to do is select the proth prime search (sieve) project in your preferences. Only work units issued AFTER 18 December 2012 11:11 UTC and received BEFORE 21 December 2012 11:11 UTC will be considered for credit.

This last part is especially important. If you're asking about the task limit, I'm concerned that you've downloaded a large quantity of PPS Sieve tasks already, in anticipation, and received the task limit message. NONE of those tasks will count for the Challenge, though they would receive normal BOINC credit. Wait until 11:11 UTC (about 2 hours from now as I type this) before downloading Challenge units. Any other PPS Sieve units you have cached already would need to be aborted (or dealt with via very creative/annoying boinc micro-management) if you want to be in the Challenge from the start. Do NOT "suspend" units... that will prevent further downloads. Suspending entire projects is okay.

Wow, I just grabbed my first batch and they all started at 347 hours! Scared me for a min. After two minutes it went down an hour.

Anyone know why this does this? Is it because it assumes at first it will be that long because it doesn't know my spec's on my laptop?

Wow, I just grabbed my first batch and they all started at 347 hours! Scared me for a min. After two minutes it went down an hour.

Anyone know why this does this? Is it because it assumes at first it will be that long because it doesn't know my spec's on my laptop?

Since you dont have usable GPU on your computers, sieve work with CPU.
And fastest CPU finish one WI in ten hours, so yours will be slower :)
Not 347 hours, but maybe 20 or so...

The *Proth Prime Search (Sieve)* WUs last ..
~ 54 minutes on my NVIDIA GeForce GTX260 O/C GPU,
~ 24 hours on my Intel Core2 Duo E7600 CPU.

The CPU crunch now the 2nd & 3rd WU in his history and the estimated times are ~ 6 days.
The GPU crunched a few and the estimated times are ~ 51 minutes.

What is the *limit of tasks in progress* for the whole PC?
If I would enable CPU + GPU in the project preferences, they would crunch continuously 24/7, or then could be times that the CPU or the GPU have all the *limit of tasks in progress* WUs and the CPU or GPU idle?

Thanks.

There is a limit of tasks in progress (downloaded to your pc at a given moment) set by the server. That limit, however, is higher (much higher) than the number of tasks your whole pc can crunch at the same time, so it will not be idlle because of that limit.
However, you can set a maximum number of cores to be used (in a pc with multicore cpu).

On a dual core, if you set "use 50% of processors" on boinc preferences, it will crunch one single wu on the cpu and another one on the gpu (no matter how many tasks you have downloaded). If you set "use 100% of processors", then it will crunch two tasks on the cpu (one per core or thread) and another one on the gpu.

Since the limit is "tasks in progress", as long as the limit is at least 1, neither your CPU nor GPU should ever go idle, as long as the PrimeGrid server is running and you're able to connect to it to get new work.

During challenges, the limit is lowered because many people switch their computers over to run the challenge, so there's far more computers running a single project than there are at normal times. Although, in theory, there's an infinite amount of work available, in practice there's only a limited number of tasks that are ready to be sent out at any one time. Although those tasks do get replenished automatically, the process does take time, and it runs on a schedule (not continuously). Therefore, if computers were allowed to download lots and lots of tasks, there's a risk that the queue would (temporarily) run dry, thus making it impossible for others to get any work for a while.

We lower the limit at the start of the challenge so that everyone gets some work to start with. Once the initial rush to get work is over, the limit is gradually raised back up so that people can get more work in their queue if that's what they desire.

The goal is to insure that all computers always have work to do and none of them ever run dry.

Hey, what's the deal? There does not seem to be a chat age for this challenge?! Is that a new thing for challenges? It stinks! Where is the camaraderie, and ability to communicate between teams?

I hope that this is not a sign of things to come.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. The link to the chat page is there on the left, right below "PrimeGrid Message Boards".

If for some reason you can't see that link, you can click here: http://www.chatzy.com/46334617429062

(It wouldn't be a bad idea to bookmark that link just in case PrimeGrid's website is down. The chatroom is a completely external site and should be up even if we're down.)

If you're referring to the old, old, OLD chat room we used to have (the one that was embedded at the bottom of the main forum page), that's been gone for a year or so. The service that ran that chat room shut down and we had to find something else.

I had the same problem on my machines that had both nVidia AND ATI/AMD GPUs. What I did was uncheck 'use nVidia' in Primegrid preferences and leave 'use ATI' checked then abort a few nVidia WUs then update primegrid in BOINC. It might take 2-3 tries. Afterwards recheck nVidia again in preferences. You may have to repeat this if you still are not receiving ATI WUs still.

Don't know why Primegrid does this sometimes but it seems that some systems may download all nVidia WUs first filling the max tasks allowed at that time thus not allowing ATI/AMD GPU tasks to download. If that doesn't help try increasing your cache by alot.

Look at the dates. Those are old WUs, probably timed out. But your ati is trashing WUs. You should Check that.

In BoinC Manager I have vote the setting "SWAP Data " 20,00"
now is: "0,00"

0.00 would definitely cause problems -- most likely that will prevent any BOINC program from ever running.

I've got that set to 75.00% on my system. Unless you are running out of memory for other things on the computer, you may as well put a large number in there to insure that BOINC has enough memory to run the programs.

If it's too low, you'll have 100% failure and never complete anything.

Is the ..

Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.38 (ati13ati)

.. maybe an OpenCL AMD/ATI GPU app?

Which hardware and driver at least needed for this app?

Thanks.

That's correct. I wonder if there's a way to specify OpenCL for BOINC yet?

Which hardware and driver at least needed for this app?

Thanks.

The minimum hardware is any ATI card that runs any version of OpenCL, all the way back to most 4000-series GPUs. (Not the 4200, but most others.)

I think the latest Catalyst drivers generally include OpenCL.

Other projects e.g. Milkyway@home and SETI@home have OpenCL <plan_class>'s for their apps.

MW@h:
(opencl_amd_ati)
(opencl_nvidia)

S@h:
(ati_opencl_100)
(opencl_ati_100)
(cuda_opencl_100)
(opencl_nvidia_100)

AFAIK & IIRC, if (opencl_x) then at least BOINC v7.x needed.
For earlier BOINC versions (ati_x) and (cuda_x) additional needed.

AFAIK & IIRC, BOINC v7.x can detect if an OpenCL GPU and driver is installed.

Nice! Having some friends come in and bail someone out is great!!! Does not say much for the team(s) - neither the one begging, nor the ones defecting from theirs! This is new to me, very odd competition it is.

Regarding rats, are those all those 'new user' accounts that crept in the last day or two? Never seen that kind of activity!! :D

Hey all - Has anyone else noticed that everybody in this challenge has identical 'Detailed Stats'!?

Odd, since some of those challenges are from 2008, and all the 'new user' accounts, along with myself, have not had the privilege of participating in that many!!!! :O

Some link or db is acting up.

Well one thing is for sure, the cows did not begg for any help from other teams! We never have and never will.
If people decide to join us, they are very welcome, but that would be their own decision and on their own initiative.

Yes. If there's no surprise in the last two hours, DPC will be the eighth team to win a PG challenge, following SETI.USA, L'Alliance Francophone, SETI.Germany, BOINCstats, Sicituradastra., Team Norway, and Ukraine. Great job! ;)

That's correct. I wonder if there's a way to specify OpenCL for BOINC yet?

Other projects e.g. Milkyway@home and SETI@home have OpenCL <plan_class>'s for their apps.

MW@h:
(opencl_amd_ati)
(opencl_nvidia)

S@h:
(ati_opencl_100)
(opencl_ati_100)
(cuda_opencl_100)
(opencl_nvidia_100)

AFAIK & IIRC, if (opencl_x) then at least BOINC v7.x needed.
For earlier BOINC versions (ati_x) and (cuda_x) additional needed.

AFAIK & IIRC, BOINC v7.x can detect if an OpenCL GPU and driver is installed.

Off-topic for this thread, but to enable the opencl plan classes requires an upgrade of the BOINC software on the server. Unfortunately our current software is quite heavily customised, so this is not as easy as one might hope, which is why it still hasn't been done (and so we can't support OpenCL on the Mac, for example).

Regarding rats, are those all those 'new user' accounts that crept in the last day or two?

Learn something new every day!

The "rats" Camulos referred to would be US - team Aggie the Pew. We refer to the Dutch Power Cows as the herd and they refer to us as the rats :)

CongRATS to DPC for pulling out a victory.

Cheers

Oh yeah! My pulse is still running out of time. What a great challenge! Maybe the greatest one in my short boinc life.

The biggest thanks to all the Keepers of the Fire Alive!!! And of course I want to mention and give my big thanks to our friends from other teams!

The whole year we've tried hard and did our best. We could make it to TOP-10 in the 2012 series of PG challenges. 9th place is a fantastic result for such a small team of fiery crunchers. And of course the 6th place@Winter Solstice with almost 31M/3 days. In 2011 it was 10M.

Thanks to all the Primegrid administration! In 2012 the challenges became more stable and efficient. Great job!

Thanks to all the rivals for giving us some crazy hours of competition.

Thanks to Ukraine team for the last challenge. It was a great battle.

P.S. Keep on crunching! Happy holidays!!! :-)

Thanks for a great challenge admins, this fas really exciting (for me anyway).

Gongrats to da cows for finally being able to take first place, and that team inside a team thingy.
Thank the god's there's a team like Sici around making everybody try so hard to beat them, bringing the best out from all of us.

Uh, i barely got to top 100 this time, guess the gts 450-s ain't cutting it anymore.
Again it was a very fun challenge, and gongrats to everybody.

I would like to congratulate everybody who has taken part, as in my mind there are no winners nor losers just a great bunch of people trying to achieve a common goal!

As many have noted, the Cows have come in first for first time. None the less, the other teams gave them a run for their money.
Team stats for this challenge

1 Dutch Power Cows 625.00 2 Sicituradastra. 600.00 3 SETI.Germany 575.00 4 Team 2ch 556.25 5 Czech National Team 537.50

And if it wasn't for people like Brain, who is in second place overall, they most likely wouldn't have made it. From my Cows heart: an udder thank you!

With the finish of this challenge, the PrimeGrid 2012 Challenge Series is over and you can already start dreaming about the next one!

To round of this year, I'll create a pdf later today of the stats and make sure it ends up where it needs to be on the site.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for the first signs of the new challenge schedule which should appear later today too after I'm done with my real life work :)
