Hi,

I'm trying to look into the difference between PCIe x16 and PCIe x8.

Let's say someone has a motherboard that has a PCIe x16 slot and a PCIe x8 slot but if both slots are populated then both slots run at x8. Let's say someone has a GeForce GT 220 in the x16 slot and the other slot empty and has two cards that are not installed anywhere, another GeForce GT 220 and a GeForce 9600 GSO.

For PrimeGrid would someone be better off leaving the x8 slot empty so that the x16 slot can run at it's full speed or putting a card into the x8 slot and have two cards both running at x8?

Thanks,

Rick

For PrimeGrid, the speed of the PCIe slot doesn't matter, since very little data is sent between the CPU and the GPU. You probably would not be able to measure a speed difference between running in a 1x slot vs. running in a 16x slot.

So, in your example, there would be no penalty to populating both PCIe slots with GPUs.
