The twin prime has evaded us for a long time, but change has come!

Based on the depth of the sieve and the available resources needed, we have decided to suspend TPS at k=63G until sufficient sieve depth is reached. We have done many tests and found out that we remove 3-4 candidates at the same time it takes to LLR one. The current sieve depth is p~7.8P and a depth of at least p=12P is desired.

Anyone interested in sieving, please see this forum. TPS Forum

The WUs in progress will be completed and credit will be granted.

Would be nice. Could be a little bit easier way for the sieving. ;)

Currently it is sieved up to 7.85P ;) Should we help to crunch down this 140k WUs at first and then go to sievieng or go to sieve and let somebody crunch the WUs?

Truly I liked the TPS, yes you could get a + prime or a - prime but what we want to stop this whole feasco is a twin + and - prime that match. And thats only going to take time, please don't take that away from us since we've worked so hard on this to get it this far, yes it doesn't get into the top 5000 which is a shame but once we get that twin prime, were finally done with it for good! And finding your own Twin Prime is a great Honor :) Just my 2 cents ~John M. Johnson~

The twin would make it into the list of largest known primes (even into the short list), since it is an archivable prime. So it is as "valuable" as a top 5000 prime. :)

So what is the TPS current status?
Are we waiting for more sieving to be done before more LLR work units are released?

Could sieving work units be released under BOINC? (not sure of the technicalities of doing this). I dont mind seiving just not really interested in manually doing it!

Lots more sieving need to be done before we can start llr-ing again,
porting the sieve to boinc will theoreticly be no problem at all, but the problem is that the sieve-file is huge (about 200-300Mb) and the server can't handle it to upload it over and over again. With boinc lots of people will download the sieve-file automaticly becouse they picked the wrong checkbox or...

If it is manual it will become harder to download the sieve-file by accident, and then it can be compressed (zip or rar or 7z or ...)

I hope you can do something with this.

Question, would there be a way you could set up TPS sieveing in the PRPNET? I would love to help if it were in that sort of setting.

Edit: Also you could post as a requirement to go to that site you have at the top that has the download of the 300mb file so you wouldn't drain the servers, then we would start the prpnet and run it like that.

Didn't see we have Newpgen testing here, guess if not I'll have to learn how to use that then :)

OK folks,

now that TPS LLR is active again, let's go for it! 10.7M candidates shouldn't take more than a few weeks, right? ;)

Regardless of how long it takes, this might be the time to think about the future. If there's no twin, how should we proceed - larger k, different n? If there is a twin - same question. I don't think it's too soon because the discussion and maybe the new sieving will take time...

Too late now - see the main page!

Now I'll have to wait (how long) to continue trying to get the badge.:-(

Let the speculation of the next n begin again.

Well done to the finders.

Why not simply go on with this exponent? I'm no expert in this, but as far as I know primes are famous for behaving unpredictably. Would it rise the chance of finding another twin if we switched to a new exponent? The current one is sieved to an optimal depth for quite some way to go still...

I'll be happy to help sieving a new exponent of course. Just wondering.

Regards, Peter

The debate seems to be about getting into the top 5000 for the ordinary primes discovered in the process. It would probably mean going to n=999999. These would take about an hour each to crunch, but sieving would no doubt take quite some time before LLR can start.

Puzzle-Peter, I share your sentiments though. It's really about the twin prime, not the ordinary primes and there are probably a few more twins lurking in the already-sieved range.

If top 5000 is the issue, then rather stick to Proth LLR.

Ah, right. I forgot about the TOP5000 issue. Now that you mention it... well, if getting the ordinary primes into the TOP5000 helps motivate people to do TPS, it might be the thing to do.

Whichever way it will go - count me in ;)

Isn't n=666,666 sieved for twin and sg? I'd go for combining those two searches and continue until a sg and twin is found.
