February - Tour de Primes 2009

2 is the first prime number...and the only even one. This makes it unique among prime numbers. Therefore, we'd like to pay homage to the number 2 and declare February, Prime Month...February being the 2nd month of the year. :) And there's no better way to pay homage to a prime number than to go out and find one. :) More precisely, a Top 5000 prime.

Since there's no Challenge for the month of February, we'd like to offer a small competition. There are no points to be gained or awards to be won...just a simple colored jersey at the end of the month. No pressure or stress other than what you put on yourself. :)

• Yellow Jersey - prime count leader
  
• Green Jersey - points (prime score) leader
  
• Checkered Jersey - on the 23rd of February we'll have a "mountain" stage and award the Checkered Jersey to the one who finds the most primes on that day (tiebreaker will be prime score for that day).
  

Prime counts and scores will be kept for all Top 5000 primes discovered in the month of February.

Don't expect the primes to come easy. Getting into the Top 5000 Primes Database is getting harder and harder with each new prime found. But let's not let this deter us from the pursuit of finding primes. As we have just been initiated into the Year of the Ox, here's a little reminder, "The Ox is the sign of prosperity through fortitude and hard work. It is unswervingly patient, tireless in its work, and capable of enduring any amount of hardship without complaint." (Wikipedia)

Currently, the fastest opportunity to find Top 5000 primes is with the Proth Prime Search project. This includes BOINC PPS LLR and PrimeGrid PRPNet PPSE.

To participate in BOINC PPS LLR, all you have to do is select it in your PrimeGrid preferences.

To participate in PRPNet PPSE, please see this post. Manual cobblestones are earned...however; it may take up to a month before they are applied.

BOINC PPS is around n=525K and PRPNet PPSE is around n=360K. Therefore, the faster tests are in PPSE. Compared to those 321 WU's, these PPS and PPSE ones will seem like a walk in the park. :)

I know the probability of finding a prime is an inverse function of the size of the number (and somewhere I even have the function). Has the Proth Search advanced so that the probability of finding a prime is significantly less than is was?

I ask because I recall statements that about 0.023 % of Proth tests resulte in primes. I was quite close to that but lately have fallen well behind. Current stats are around 52 000 tests for 9 primes which includes the earlier more succesful period.

I imagine it is just luck of the draw but I thought I ask. Certainly it is no form of complaint.

Heres my stats on primes (PPS) entering the database for the last few days-- ALL are re-checks I think-- and 1 belongs to me-- Seems they occur at a rate of 1 to 4 per day but this was during the 321 challange so I would expect this to increase as people more attach to PPS--- Note the date stamp is UTC+10 (my time)--- I posted the ranges of reportables (New) on the PPS project thread----

I have to wait for money to buy new heatsinks, with the Arctic Cooling Alpine64 PWM i got i could only use one cpu because the heatsinks are to wide to fit both onto the mainboard. I need the ones from EKL, damn are those expensive with around 40 Euros... :eek:
Note: I have mounted a BeQuiet Straight Power 350 W for this new client, next month i would migrate my homeserver from the Xeon 5405 onto the Opteron and save power in the long term reserving the Xeon and the Core 2 Duo 6550 for challenges.

2. uncompress
   
3. open file prpclient.ini and edit the following:

My last prime - a previously reported one - is of ~69150 i think, that amounts to ~22k WUs without a slight hint of a prime. The must hit me hard in the near future i presume.

Feb 8th has been good as well...and each day we get closer to n=540K in BOINC where afterwards most prime finds will be new.

FYI...another port has opened up in PrimeGrid's PRPNet where almost ALL primes have been new so far. For more information, please see this post.

Keep those primes coming. It's a two way tie for the top spot right now. :)

I should warn (perhaps apologise to) fellow crunchers that I have found & ressurected another ancient box soon to be connected to PG (if all goes well)-- When applying electricity to said box there came a fearful squeaking noise (no memory I thought) upon removing the covers I found an ancient mouse holding an abacus that had got his tail caught in the power supply fan when it started-- after some negiotation we agreed to attempt to connect said host to PG--- We are currently installing service pack 1 Win 2000 (2,3&4 to go) -- This might be some sort of ressurection record--

I should warn (perhaps apologise to) fellow crunchers that I have found & ressurected another ancient box soon to be connected to PG (if all goes well)-- When applying electricity to said box there came a fearful squeaking noise (no memory I thought) upon removing the covers I found an ancient mouse holding an abacus that had got his tail caught in the power supply fan when it started-- after some negiotation we agreed to attempt to connect said host to PG--- We are currently installing service pack 1 Win 2000 (2,3&4 to go) -- This might be some sort of ressurection record--

OK, after making the news post yesterday with references to the yellow jersey and peloton, I was not able to get the idea out of my head...so, I changed the Prime Month Competition to the Tour de Primes 2009! :) A month long quest to find primes.

Instead of crowning a King or Queen, we'll award the Yellow Jersey. This also gives us a chance to hand out the Green Jersey to the points (prime score) leader. Finally, on the 23rd of February we'll have a "mountain" stage and award the Checkered Jersey to the one who finds the most primes on that day (tiebreaker will be prime score for that day).

Maybe it'd be fun to do primes per RAC? Certainly more fun for the likes of me with a rather elderly bike made of gas pipe and a tendency to meet DoES for a swift half and a dirty story rather than race as compared with them as as has the other kind of six pack and a fancy bike

Still found nothing besides the "already-reported-double-check".
Seems like i qualify for the red-number for the most aggressive competitor yet without any turnaround.
